Trailering Mishap

It's official-I'm an idiot!

Cruising along with the boat the other day in the driving rain. Look in the mirror and notice that the two "backrests" or hatches for the back seats are up and acting like airplane flaps-I did not secure them with the bungie tie. So I slow down, but they're not coming down. I don't get out to fix the problem 'cos of the rain.

Back in the boat today to clean 'er up for the weekend and noticed that one side now only has half a "backrest", the other side is missing the post for securing!!!

Can't wait to call the shop and tell this story

Darn the bad luck---- and no one around with a camera -- any tailgaters to enjoy the suprise?

All jokeing aside, I have seen the piano hinge pin work out after a rough ride. I now check them -- at least on the wash-- rack after every trip.

Northman,

Do feel too bad. I did a similar thing. I drove from Palm Coast to Cudjoe Key when I fund out that I did the same thing on one side. The backrest lost 2 of three screws. and was about to loose the last one.

On my 170 CC I use a nylon cord to run accross the stern from one cleat to the other and looped through the bracket for the stowed anchor light. This cord prevents the hatches from blowing open. Caught this condition when first trailering home from purchase/ shake down trip. Some models have a latch that holds everything closed. My 2002 is free to flip open which happens above 50 mph.

WELLLLLL since we are confessing of our Idiot moments. Hee heee. I did not secure my bilge hatch, had it on the back compartment....got to the ramp...no lid. It took a couple of weeks for Dick to find a new for me.

Now I thru bolt the small dual hinges and added large ss door hinges to the lower seat part
and,of course, latch the thing down.

Talking

I can top all you guys. Two weeks ago I headed up to erie to hunt walleye. While traveling down the toll road at almost 70mph I found out that I had forgotten to reclip the tilting part of my center console back down. I found this out because after looking in my rear view mirror for several minutes trying to figure out what didnt look right I relized that my fully electronics loaded console had flipped back open and had crashed fully into the seats. luckily the only damage was the two wires that hold the console from fliping all the way open when you open it had pulled out of the mounts. Thank goodness an easy fix.

Do you all want to know why I use a boat cover all of the time? I like to keep what's in the boat......in the boat.

One day Astro......just wait.....one day......you'll see something "flappin'" in the rear view mirror too.
Trailering a boat has got to be the most imperfect, accident waiting to happen thing on the road. That's why I began using Trailer Assist from BoatUS, because if you trailer enough, something unexpected will eventually happen. But let's hope not.

Everyone be safe out there Memorial Weekend!

I purchased my used boat minus 1 jumpseat--I ordered one from merrits---they have sold alot of these to folks who forgot to latch the seats. I religously check these before going anywhere so as not to have to purchase another seat. We rarely use the seats so the cushions are removed and stored unless we know we are going to need the seating back there.

Latch em down--put the latch checks into your exit routine along with transome straps, plugs etc.

The guy at merrits confessed to me that he had picked up a new 190 to bring to his delaership and forgot to check the jumpseats and lost one.

happens to the best
