ICOM 402S Install on 190 Bay CC
I got the ICOM 402S for Christmas http://www.icomamerica.com/products/marine/m402/
Where are you folks mounting your fixed-mount marine radios? I've seen pics of radios mounted externally under the throttle, but that looks like it would be in the way of my knees. I've also seen them mounted in the console where my factory radio is located - my wife would be mad as can be if I made that swap. Another idea would be to mount it on top next to my Garmin, but then I would lose that space for junk. Any ideas? :?: |

I used the SS ratchet rail mount:
http://www.shakespeare-marine.com/an...het-4188-s.htm This supports a 4' fiberglass extension mast with a 3' whip mounted at the top. The extension keeps the transmission signal higher and above my head. The coax is fed through the extension mast and out the bottom just above the rail-mount and directly to the back of the radio. I had to cut the coax to length and solder a PL-259 connector. The only wires coming from the CC is the power and ground through a small hole I drilled into the fire extinguisher mount location. I'm now looking for a rubber grommet to seal the hole I made, but it doesn't appear to be necessary. The radio is mounted where MB and 190steve suggested. |

Heres a hole with a seal for your wire.

Hi Cincinnati,
Just got the same radio. I need to pick an antenna (Shakespeare vs. Digital, hum???) and install it. I like the DSC and NMSI features of the 402S. When connected to a GPS (which I don't have right now) this radio can be a lot of fun and increase safety a lot. Which Garmin do you have? I am looking @ the 198c. Expensive though ![]()

I'm happy with the 3' whip. Easy, cheap and works well. The 4' extension mast really improves the range and keeps the RF's away from my pea-brain.
My Garmin is a 168c Sounder. This is an older unit than what you'll be able to pick up now. My only complaint is that the 168 screen size isn't big enough for both GPS and Sounder split/screen - but works for my purposes. Garmin build quality is fantastic. Has survived many a rain soaking. I would recommend going with a split/screen GPS/Sounder so that you have both GPS and fish finding capabilities. Others believe that you should have these as separate units. But my console isn't big and like having just the one unit. As far as what you should buy, I would have to defer to those that know more about transducers. Prolly the most important piece of the puzzle with these units is the transducer which sends out the sounder signal and reads the bottom/depth. I'll stop there as I really don't know much about these units. Look at the 178 Sounder in black/white http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap178s/ and the 198C in color http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap198c/ |

The 198 has the sounder and split screen, 192 does not. A thread on thehulltruth.com gives a lot of info on the 198c. The recommendation is to buy the unit without the transducer that comes with it and get Garmin's P66 transducer instead. Like you I don't know much about electronics so I am just repeating what I read.
