Molarboater, if it was my boat I'd forget about the vented loop and go the second route, a new through-hull above the water line. As you said, you can use current fitting for a raw water washdown.

The centrifugal impellor pumps are good in that they can pump vast quantities of water but have a failing that they cannot pump too much of a head or in other words, can't lift the water very high. A little research and you can find a graph on what the loss is per foot of lift. However, if your exit through-hull is only six inches above the water line and has a loop that extends up another foot, the looped area does not count as lift once the pump has overcome the intitial climb since a syphoning action occurs. The only problem is once the pump shuts down, all the water between the pump and the top of the loop will probably drain back into the bilge.

As far as backflow on a pump, impellor pumps do not prevent back flow but you could put a check valve in the line that would prevent backflow. I don't recommend it since it's one more place where a blockage could occur and shut your system down.

I Never Had A Problem With Water Backing In On My '01 186 , But That Explains Why Triumph Went With The Cycling Bilge Pumps--altho It Killed My Start Battery Several Times. I Believe I Would Put An Inline Check Valve Before I Go Thru Cutting A New Above Waterline Thru Hull Fitting Or Rerun The Hose To Get More Hose In The "air Loop" Above The Thru Hull Fitting

Well, I faxed Bryant a problem sheet and he is going to pull the parts and send them to me. I mentioned placing a thru hull above the waterline while on the phone and he didn't advise that due to lack of access in the 190 bilge.

I will see what Triumph sends and also investigate another higher thru hull.

I was trying to figure where all the water was coming from as well and figured out too that it was coming in from the bilge pump outlet too. I have 2 thru the hole fittings so water comes thru both whenever the 2 fittings are below the water line. Its as if the system was designed to flush out the bildge!!!!!!ha ha

I purchased my 2002 used so I wondered if the boat originally came with some kind of check valves or something??

I wonder if scuppers would work?

BayCoastal, call Triumph customer service and ask for Bryant and discuss your issue. He will be able to help.

I recieved the "flapper" and a tube of Rule to place over the bilge thru hull. It is a small version of the scupper flappers.....which I removed and replaced with the much better ball in cage type. Maybe I should use the ball in cage type over the bilge thru hull? Maybe though, the back siphoning effect will suck the "flapper" over the hole and seal it with suction. I'll go with the factory fix first and report back later.
