Hi Guys, 19' w/90 hp Honda question.

Hi People.

I was sent to this site by a guy on BloodyDecks. I posted this question there and was told you all might be able to help.

For those that don't know, I operate several boats for work. Our newest is the 19' that we used an existing 90 hp Honda 4 stroke on. For what I do, it's plenty. I need a whopping 5mph for my gig. The powers that be are wanting planning speeds with 4 aboard plus gear. Gonna happen?

With the current prop, I'm hearing one of the operators got the boat on plane with 3 aboard. One of the more novice operators couldn't make it happen. The motor is over propped, that's a given. I'm curious if it's going to be worth working on the prop or just keep it lighter. Currently the boat has no tabs.

Thoughts?"

I had a 90 honda on my last boat, a 19' Key west. When I added Dol-fin and had no problems getting on plane. Are you trimming the motor all the way in before take off?

I have not been on the boat yet. I'm only getting info from one of the other operators and someone who was on the boat. I'm considering the Permatrim and possibly tabs. I know they overloaded an underpowered boat, I just want to know how close I am.

Thanks for the Dol-fin info.

Try one of these http://www.bobsmachine.com/Products/transom_stabilizer.cfm for you will get
  • less flex
  • less drag
  • better slow speed handling
  • stay on plane at slower speeds, thus burn less fuel and increase range all for around the same price point.
Just remember...
  • You will need less engine trim and too much trim can lead to some high speed loss from too much drag.
  • It is not designed to be a step.
  • Some engine builders state that the installation of such can void the warranty while others (like Honda) sell them as a factory accessory so check your paper work first.

Make sure the motor is mounted in the lowest position, then you may have to experiment with some cheap aluminum props and also make sure the motor is getting to the proper rpms.
Good luck

I've got a 90 merc. 4-stroke on my 190. I'm running a aluminum 13 1/4 x 15 pitch prop
and mine planes with no problems with 4 adults, full tank of gas and fishing gear. It tops out with all the above at 37 mph at 5900 rpms. It will do 39 at 6000 rpms with only 2 aboard.

Sorry it took so long. I've tried to post a few times but it kept getting kicked back. Hopefully this will work. Here's a pick of "my" girl.

She planned easy with 4, and "my" sonar gear aboard. The motor was saying she needs a new spinner and that's being taken care of. I'm sure the initial reports were due to a new boat operator. PermaTrim and tabs are in the works. I hit 32+mph with the stated load. Pretty good considering all I need is 5.5 mph and a steady boat. The big yellow thing is my "fish" for the sidescan. We can see a can resting in the sand and know it's a can. The new fish can pick out rounds of ammo if they are standing up.
