'04 190Bay Yamaha fuel/water seperator mounting question

Bought the Yamaha brand fuel/water seperator kit today and I'm curious about mounting details.

I read all applicable posts I could find concerning this subject, but I'm a little confused. One poster said that they mount the seperators inside the starboard side well area, on the "backsplash" side.......looking at mine earlier today (I do not have batteries in this well, just wire bundles, cables and the fuel line), I couldn't discern which might be construed as a backsplash. Any suggestions? It seems that a good location would be the sidewall that abuts the engine well...but the construction doesn't include access to the back-side of this particular panel, and it seems that this assembly is going to be heavy enough that it would benefit from being through-bolted....with a nut behind.

Does anyone with direct knowledge of the construction know if this, the engine-well-facing side of the area below the starboard rear seat of a 2004 is sufficiently stout to provide secure fastening with screws, instead of bolts?

BTW, I bought the Yamaha branded unit because the local Yamaha dealer stocks the units with the stainless steel mount only, instead of the powder-coated aluminum ones that my local Triumph dealer stocks....his are Racors instead of Yamaha.....I like the idea of the clear bowl, however, which hangs below the Racor units....there are none such on the Yamaha. Is it true that the actual filters that screw onto the bracket are interchangeable?

I intend to mount it high enough to be able to use both units anyway.

Sorry for the repetitive post.

I suspect that they are all either Racor brand or a Racor spin off. Mine is the Honda unit with the clear bowl (which I like) and I mounted it inside so the salt spray was not as bad. Nothing worse than not being able to get the filter off when needed due to being salt water rusted on http://www.triumphowners.net/photos/...6/limit/recent

Through-bolted??

Thanks for the replies.....I too will most likely install it inside of the compartment rather than in the motor well itself. The plastic that makes up the "lining" of the motor well, on my '04 anyway, seems to be somewhat thinner than the adjoining inside "sidewall" of the compartment...it looks like you guys have mounted the filters with screws, rather than through-bolting using a nut. No problems with that????

I ask because it seems like this is a fairly heavy assembly to hang from only two mounting holes.

At the recommendation of my dealer I mounted mine to the splashwell side of the rear starboard compartment using 1 inch galvanized 3/8 inch lag bolts. I would have used stainless but I couldn't find any. A good glop of rule sealant on each bolt, of course. I see no evidence that the sidewall is suffering from the weight or that the bolts are pulling out. I was concerned about that also. Hope this helps.

Mine in the above picture is thru bolted and yes, I applied a nice film of waterproof grease to exposed metal. Worked well for the first year anyway.

I chose the splashwell because my batteries are in the starboard storage area and didn't want a cannister full of gas closed up in there with two batteries or potential fuel leakage into the bilge without ventilation.

I keep remimbering when I was 10 and had my first plastic boat, a Snark Sailfish (still have it 31 years later!) and my parents made me and my buddy take the Coast Guard Aux course. It seemed like 10-3 hour lectures and was torture at that age. But, I will never forget when they talked about gas and just a little spark, they had a metal tube and an ignition wired into it. One eyedropper of fuel, and KABOOM!!! I never want to see how flammable Roplene would be, specially with my wife or daugher on board.

Murphy's Law rules in boating.

Done deal and thanks again

Lazy Loaf and Molar......I installed it today within the confines of the starboard aft compartment and mounted it to the splashwell (motor) side with #14x1.25" stainless pan head screws with washers. I don't know why I obsessed over it so.......it was very easy, particularly after having removed the folding seat/casting platform pieces before I started.......

The Roplene appears to be very stout in this location, I would guessstimate a minimum of 3/8"...possibly thicker.

As I mentioned before I bought the Yamaha branded filter...my local dealer talked about a training seminar all of the local Yamaha types attended at which Yamaha reps swore that it is physically impossible for any water to pass this filter.....yet there's not any visual reference to verify anything.....

I do hope that the Racor filter with the clear sight bowl fits.

BTW.....I picked up two packs of the yellow foam practice golf balls at WalMart a few days ago................what a perfect fit for those aft scuppers....as well as the scuppers in the new Ocean Kayaks fishing kayak we scored in late summer

Yep, the pratice golf balls were one of my better ideas and they do fit very well. I should have sold that idea back to Triumph years aga! Ha-Ha...
