Leaning post vs. Cooler seat

I currently have the cooler seat and find myself always pushing the back forward towards the console and leaning on my knee on the poorly padded cooler seat. THis can be painful on 15 minute or longer rides. I am 6'4 and 310 lbs, and I belive that is part of the consideration. I have been thinking of changing out the cooler seat for the leaning post. The only thing I think keeping me from it is I sit on the cooler seat facing the back of the boat sometimes when fishing. How do you guys that have the leaning post fish. Has anyone performed this mod? Is the back removable from the leaning post? Does anyone with the leaning post wish they had the cooler seat?

Any opinions or advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

~Jason

Never wished I had the cooler seat myself, I have though had to have it repositioned a few times before I found the correct spot for both standing and setting. I am not a real big fan of the older factory leaning post due to the lack of under the cushion storage. I have found a model in the Bass Pro catalog that I like much better for about the same cost.

Maybe one day I will sell my factory model and "upgrade" it OR I just may have a storage bin installed. Either way, I like mine for standing up on when scouting the flats with my trolling motor remote in hand for sure

Leaning Post in a 170CC

Jason:

I put a leaning post from a 190 in my 17CC. I have a cooler, the back rest is removeable and I love it. I move all around and the leaning post even serves as a strong hold. I also troll using it when I remove the back rest. It has rod holders. I posted a few pictures on the 17CC pictures. I could not be happier with it. In fact, makes me ask the question why Triumph does not make this an option.

Blessings,

armychap

Bay 190, Installed factory leaning post with removable backrest, with install, cost @$900. I would look at the ones online with storage under the seat (Neptune). I also have never wanted to remove the backrest and since I have rocket launchers on my t-top, never have put a rod in the leaning post holders. Finish on the factory job was a little sloppy but nothing a hand file and redrilling the seat screw holes couldn't fix.

Someone wanted my cooler seat (which is a poor cooler) so I sold it to them for $100 at the boat dealers. An 70qt igloo ultra cold fits perfectly and holds ice for days under the leaning post and you sit up high and much better for what I do. Use the rod holders for putting scissors, hand gaff and bait prep knife in.

cooler seat mod

Jason, I too have looked at my cooler seat and wondered about the leaning post, but couldn't part with the cash. I did do a mod that has solved my problem and I am satisfied with the result. I built a wooden block for each side of the seat that positions the seat in a leaning post stop. The moveable back seat will only go back to a certain place and stop, allowing me to lean back on the seat while I drive. You still can move it forward and sit on the seat facing backwards. If I want to sit forward I just pull up on the blocks and remove them. I put a long screw thru the cooler seat into the floor at each front corner to give me extra 'leaning' strength. Two people leaning back has not budged it yet. I am attempting to send pics. If they don't come thru and you want to see them, let me know and I can email you more. don

Mudd-mann,
Great Mod!! I've used something similar, but yours looks better and has more support on both sides of the metal piece.

Fattiresc,

When taking delivery on my 2002 170 CC the deal included exchange of the flip back cooler seat for a Todd adjustable heigth leaning post. This gave me four more rod holders and a neat cubby inside the moulding of the leaning post/ seat. Set low it is an acceptable seat.

After four years I have had no problems with the heigth adjustment but have some stitches on the coushion that allow water to seep into the padding. The boat is stored inside so this is only a problem when in use or wash down.
Todd offers a replacement coushion. The Todd unit comes with a back rest but I did not want it. Space on the 170 was fine for the leaning post but the back rest would only take more room. A 48 qt. cooler fits very well under the leaning post. I started out with a Gott 60 qt. with the moulded in handles (no longer available) most unhappy when it was lost (blew out) on the back roads of VA heading home from Ches. Bay.

Again, too much informaton...

Putershark,

No photos this quick but the website for Todd is www.Toddusa.com which has many choices for leaning post, adjustable and fixed plus many more items from the Todd lineup of aftermarket marine equipment.

The adjustment for heigth is simply to turn the knob counter clockwise on each pedestal until the unit slides up or down as desired. Then tighten clock wise. Demonstrated to hold two big boys (205 + 240) as a seat, anchored in moderate 1-3 swells.
