What is the shortest shaft length (trolling motor)...

that I can get by with?

I see most people use 54" shaft, but will anything shorter work? I will only need it for the lakes.

54", otherwise you will be stooping very low and making noise with the prop close to the surface......and you can get away with a too long shaft but not a too short one.

MolarBoater hit the nail on the head. On a flat, calm lake you could get by with a shorter shaft, but who boats only in flat, calm water? Nothing scares a fish like a trolling motor sucking in air every time a wave rocks the boat. Get the longer shaft and save yourself some heartache when the wind picks up. Good luck.

Hello All,

Brand new to the forum. A quick question about trolling motor shaft length. When you say 54" is common, are you talking about a bow mount or a transom mount?

thanks

mick
