Fuel vent question

Last weekend my Suzuki DT150S quit while running at about 4,800 rpm. The engine seemed to be doing fine, then sputtered once or twice and just died. I had been in WOT for about sixty seconds and was backing it offf. Engine has aboutt 50 hours total run time.

While trouble shooting the fuel system today I noticed that the fuel cap is located right next to the gas tank vent. On my boat, the vent hose appears to go directly into the fuel tank without any type of protective or 'one-way' vent cap or fitting of any kind. I suspect that when I washed my boat last week that I introduced a lot of soap/water into my fuel tank, over saturated the fuel water separator filter and killed my engine in the middle of a big lake! I managed to get it restarted and make it back to the dock but it sounded like **** on fire...a lot of loud 'popping' noises, etc. I have replaced the fuel filter and will let the fuel settle to see if it separates, etc. Doesn't it seem that there should be a one-way or protective cap of some sort on the vent?

I may be mistaken but I think the vent hole next to the gas filler cap on the port side of the console vents to the outside back of the boat on the right or left side of the outboard.
Try blowing some compressed air down the vent hole and see where it exits. My boat is in Fla in storage or I would check it.

That's the fuel overflow drain....and it will drain overboard. I have put gallons of water down it with no problems.

Check for a pinched fuel line under the starting batteries, a loose connection of the fuel line into the motor. Could be bad fuel so add StarTron and install a water separator....you'll need all this eventually anyway.
