trolling motor shaft length

I am getting ready to put a bow mount trolling motor on my 190 bay. I like the Minn Kota riptide ST-80 and there are 2 shaft sizes...a 54" and a 60." I'll be fishing in some rough water (CA inshore) and wondered what the other owners have been using. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I have a 54" shaft mounted on mine. It's not down all the way and it has never come out of the water even when fishing on rather windy days.

Thank you Ace. I searched the archives and there a couple of opinions. I just placed an order for a Riptide ST-80 with a 54" shaft. I appreciate the info.

No problem. Your 190 will soar with that riptide. I'm assuming it's an 80# thrust?

I also bought one of these after a rough day on the water:

The shaft and motor head don't bounce or slam at all with the ram mount. It's not cheap, but well worth it in my opinion if you are going to be in rough seas.

Here is the only pic I have with my trolling motor down. You can see how much more shaft is left that can be lowered.

I'm not sure if you can get the remotes for the riptides, but I added one to my motor and it's nice. It's a control that u can wear like a watch so you can control the boat from anywhere on the boat. I fish off the back when the wife and friends and laying out up from!

Dont forget about the 190 trolling motor mount you will need to get for a rock solid
