Couple of issues with fuel and trim

Hello all!!

I stumbled onto this site while searching for parts for my 2004 Triumph 190 bay with 115 4stroke Yamaha, and let me tell you I am glad I did. You guys seem really helpful and I look forward to contributing some mods once I get them out of my head and into the boat! Well anyway on to my questions.

1. My fuel gauge stopped working. Is there a way to troubleshoot whether is the gauge or the sending unit?

2. My Trim gauge also doesnt work..again any good ways to troubleshoot?

Thanks in advance guys.

Fuel Gauge "Not Working"

Not long after purchasing my 2004 190 Bay (probably April of this year), I noticed the fuel gauge showing completely empty while I was sure I had a little less than 1/2 tank.
Sure enough, it seemed to stick in the off position when the key was turned off and stayed there when the key was turned on again. Fortunately, a little tap on the front glass made it work again. It's been working this way ever since. Hopefully, the situation will not deteriorate as I can live with the little tap to get it going again.
Hope your situation is resolved as easily.

Lostfish79,
My fuel gauge stopped working on my 170 bass. I purchased a new one and when I installed it, the new one worked fine. Since both the OEM and replacement gauge were made by Faria, I discovered on the package of the replacement that Faria gave a lifetime guarantee. I sent them the bad gauge and several months later I got a replacement (which is on my shelf). You could also buy a real cheap gas gauge to do the test, but not all brands of gauges require the same size hole in the dashboard.

Since you have two gauges that don't work, this might mean there is an electrical problem. Perhaps you have lost the ground to these two gauges. That would explain why they do not work. You or a mechanic should check under the dash with a circuit tester or ohm meter to make sure that you do have both a ground and current.

Of course, the problems could also be the sending units.

Good luck,

Troll
