Question 190 Casting Deck Hatch Covers

Dick,
Got an idea I want to bounce off of you . Those gray hatch covers down here in Ole Spanish Florida get mighty dang hot in the summer (poor choice of color by Triumph) so I was thinking about laying down a coat in white of that new Krylon Fusion paint that (in theory) bonds to plastic

http://www.krylon.com/main/product_t...roduct_details

to help cool them off and would be a low budget upgrade . It appears though from looking at the hatches that my 04 model covers have some kind of clear sheet on the top (kind of like an automotive paint clear coat) on them that may prevent it from sticking? Next time you walk past one, see if that shine I see might be due to such (look at one edge on), or are they just plain old starboard hatch covers and mine just shine out of raw luck and TLC.

It sure would be nice to walk up there bare foot (the only thing I miss about fiberglass decks) once in a while.

Thanks much!
Dave

Dave, The hatches are a Starbord product called Starlite, It's a lighter materal that is a sandwich of aerated Poly for weight reduction and High Density Poly for durability. The Krylon Fusion paint worked well on my lawn furnature but I'm not sure how well it will work on the anti skid surface of the hatches. We will pick up a can this weekend and try it on a scrap hatch. We think that if we leave it in the sun and walk on it it should be a good test. Carl thinks that the expansion and contraction of the hatch will loosen the paint. Only time will tell, so let's see what happens to the test piece. The new 06 product will have white hatches.

Thumbs up

Thanks Dick!
I wonder if I was to drop them off at an automotive body shop and had them shot with some Corvette type of paint that has a lot of flex agents in it, that they would hold up better? So much for the low budget fix though

Hopefully the Krylon will hold up and I won't try painting mine till I hear back from you on your results... Do me a favor though, and pitch that scrap chunk in the walkway for the front door to make sure it gets a lot of wear and tear for the testing period

Thanks again,
Dave

The changes that I know about for the 190 are: New upholstory colors, New graphics, Redesigned rear jumpseats that have a higher back, Folding cleats of 316SS, Side railswill be 1 1/4" 316SS, Leaning post with rocket launchers is standard, SS horn, SS drain plugs, All Starbord will be white. That's all I know.

Question

So tell me Dick,

How is the paint holding up on those test items their Brother? It is now in the 90's here and my "feets" are starting to really get a little warm

One could pull that Redfish out of the water and pitch him up onto the casting deck and blacken the puppy right on the spot if you know what I mean...

Thanks again!
Dave

Dave, Doesn't work on HD Polyethylene, It does work somewhat better on the LD poly. But, I wouldnt try painting the boat, We did paint a total 17 open 2 years ago, primed with 94 primer, Painted Olive Drab Green, it looked great then, it looks terrible today. This time we used Krylon and The Home depot brand, the only color we could get was brown, but for a test we thought it would be OK. It scrached off immeditaly after drying and kept scratching off even after giving it time to cure, We felt like Myth Busters, It don't work!

Dick

PS: My polyproplene deck table looks great Brown.

Thanks for all the help Dick!

That though is a bummer for sure... I'll see if I can cook up another myth for you all to enjoy debunking

Thought about a pair of flip flops? They work for me.

Then you better go pick up and wear some hip waders cause it is going to get you anytime set or lay down on the deck to relax or work on something also ! Ha-Ha... Love the low budget recomendation (already do such) but that is no fix trust me
