04 190 Bay Side Rod Holders

Would like to see what you guys have used for replacement units for I bet that many of you feel like I do, that the factory equipment "just don't get it" The OEM ones...
  • Too slow to get a rod out of when that Big Tarpon swims by
  • Too hard to mount rods back into...
  • Don't hold rods over waves very well...
And no in case you were wondering, I do not like using the console vertical rod holders cause those rods then get in my way when I am standing up on the leaning post (My version of the Crow's Nest) casting. Well, at least till I can get my polling platiform installed

So let me know what other systems have you all used (internet links if you can find them) and like...

Thanks much!
Dave

I don't use the console rod holders either, unless I am fishing fresh ultra light tackle in which the rods just fit under the bimini.

I installed two vertical mount rod holders at the base on the bottom of my leaning post and two vertical mount rod holders on the seat back of the leaning post(well haven't yet bolted these two on, but will once I get enough ambition to get the cover off). All four are Tigress 2 aluminium and 2 SS. Summer's finally here where I live on the north shore of Lake Ontario. Too much work around the house after a long, miserable winter.....

Will post some pix when I get the cover off...

Paul

Oh yea, I also bolted on two adjustable mount CE Smith rod holders on the front stanchions of my bow rail. Supprisingly enough, the rods don't fall out even in 3 to 4 footers!!!

Thanks for the ideas Paul,

I installed 4 of these in white (looks real good) from Boaters World and mounted them using some of the same screw holes as the factory ones...

http://www.attwoodmarine.com/Product...ng+Accessories

Which has to be the worlds longest web page address! Ha-Ha...

I can now get out a pre-rigged rod pretty fast with these puppies. Now I am working on using one of the old ones as a front casting deck holder so I can lay a few rods up their beside me in case that Redfish missed (blew up on) my first offering, I can reach down and grab another pre-loaded weapon just like the Bass Tour boys do

Thanks for help!

That is a sweet setup - in fact your whole rig is one sweet fishing machine. I can't imagine what the 150 would do as my Honda 130 already gets up there pretty good.

Question - do those rod holders do a good job keeping your rods secure while trailering? I normally only trailer a couple of miles on a normal weekend, but when I'm going on the highway to a new fishing spot, I like to put my rods in those holders. I'm afraid that they would pop out on the road. But yours look much better than what came from the factory.

Thank you!

It has been a long work in process getting the rig upgraded into the skinny water hunter that you now see, but it is getting there... Need the polling platform installed and to finish out the rest of the rear decking (I'm going to cover some of that engine cut out) so I have even more of a rear cat walk and that should just about do it...

Yes the 150 is quick, but it is not super fast with its present prop. Would need a Stainless Model for more flat out top end speed, but she will boogie all trimmed out around 50. My major design goals were more in reducing draft, running skinny and getting good range this while having a very open fishing platform which she seems to do very well...

Those rods holders now have only been tested with your standard inshore (Bass) rods size wise and they work fine... Thicker Rods like Tarpon and Jack sticks "may" require that you trim out some of the foam to make them fit, but that is easy enough done with a razor blade. You have to remember though that these holders (unlike the factory model) only hold the rod and not the handle so you may have to space them closer together to support your equipment.

I will know more after this weekend Cincinnati since I found this place that had a school of BIG (30 pounder) Jacks hanging out and I am bringing a "Special Stick" with a Big Woodchopper attached (what a gas) this weekend JUST to pick a fight with one. I say if those holders can handle the run through that pass to get at them and the rod not fall on the deck, then they should work fine for your needs also. I will keep you updated...

Tight Lines!

Cincinnati,

I did not get a chance to get out last week due to the bungee injury that knocked me down like a shot elephant , but hopefully if my vision holds I will make it out this weekend for a real rod holder test.

In the mean time, I found a system that I would much rather have and hopefully I can secure the part numbers and order the frames from Scout Boats on the rod holder system they use on the 170 and 190 Costa Models that looks great.

Those don't look like they would leave much room for walking around the CC. I wonder if there are any similar to what you've already installed with a strap or clip that would lock-in the rods.

Should be a good project.

I think I'm going to order these if we can't find anything better and attempt a mod on securing the rods.

Hey - these don't look too bad. But doesn't say if they are stainless or not.

Hard to say on the Scout rod holders. Their catalog states that they will hold 10 rods (that would be nice) but the first Scout dealer I called try to tell me that the forward rod tube did most of the work. OK yea, if you space them too close together I would agree.

I have a Scout dealer close to my house and I am going to swing by and measure them to see just how far out they would extend towards the console and I will let you know. I was also thinking of adding another set of those Attwood holders below the current set on the port side to give me even more of a rack to hold a few more rods. One can never carry enough pre-rigged weapons you know

Was also thinking about installing this system for the forward casting deck so I can have a few rods forward with me (yet still secure) when hunting the flats.

Which would make it nice since (in theory) I could crank up the Honda and make a quick run to another spot and not worry about them falling into the drink.

More information can be found here

Enjoy!

Replace the "Rod SAvers" holders with marine lumber versions that hold 3 rods and have a built in black bungee retainer. Held my Senator 114H's OK (not absolute) as well as the Penn 8500's(held perfectly) on the other side. Purchased Taco reel holders and may attach to the T-Top. The rocket launchers off the leaning post as well as the Ttop are the best, bar none but not much of an option for poling.
