Perco Battery Switch
Any suggestions on the best location to install a Perco battery switch on the 191? Looks like right above where the batteries set but wanted to check first.
Thanks, Bluefin |

Rather than plywood which can get soft due to moisture I try to mount stuff using some HDPE plastic (I use those thick cutting boards in 3/8" to 1/2") or Starboard if you want.

Bluefin,
The new '07 210 has its Perco mounted facing outside under the helm dash area. I am planning on moving mine to that general area for ease of access. You can get a covered box, designed for that purpose, that keeps the switch protected from salt spray. Since you are doing a new install, I would keep it in an easily accessable area that does not require you to open up a hatch. A agree with the starboard for mounting it on also. Plywood will just cause problems over time. Codfish |

Mounted slightly above and medially to the two batteries. I made a cradle after loosing a battery per year with it sitting at a tilt. Used heavy duties and pressure treated wood.....well, my father contributed that device as I would have used Starboard as well.....we'll see how long it lasts, 3 years so far no problem. That's an L.A. fix. "Lower Alabama", that is. haha

Perko Switch
Thanks for all the ideas. It was -2 here this morning so I will have to wait to start the project. Do you guys know if a Garmin 398 or 498 will fit well on the 191? I like the 398 because it has most of North Americas lakes downloaded on it.
Thanks again, Bluefin |

Bluefin,
I have a Garmin 178C combo. I'm not sure about the 398 or 498 fit, but if you have not purchased one yet go to Garmin's web site and check out the new models that are coming out in March 2007. I was looking at the 400 series and they are praising the new chart technology. Good luck. John D. |

I love the new Garmin 430s and 530s. Just don't know if I can wait until they hit the market. I e-mailed Garmin on the specific dates the units will be available. More product for your boating dollars. They should bring down the price of the 398 and 498 units when they come out.

I have the perko switch on my 191 FS mounted in the battery compartment. I am only using two batteries right now so there was no space issues. I mounted it against the inner wall that backs up against the fuel tank compartment. The location is good because I can reach in easily when the boat is covered to switch it off when it is being stored.
I also installed the garmin 398 last summer. It fits nicely underneath the windshield. The only drawback is you can't view it from the front of the boat. It's not really a big deal for me because I tend to fish off the back most of the time anyway. The 398 is exactly what I wanted. During the summer, details of the lakes come in handy. I purchased the blue chart card that covers the San Francisco bay area all the way down to Mexico. Now I have detailed maps of the California Delta, which is where I do most of my fishing and detailed maps of the lakes, which is where I do most of my playing. I can take a few pictures of the installation next time I have the boat at the house (hopefully full of fish next week!) if you're interested. |
