Rod Holders

My 191 F/S came with two Perko rod holders in stern. I want to add two more about 3 feet behind those two originals so I can troll 4 rods. However, since a Triumph's inner liner is filled with foam where does the water that gets in the rod holder drain? Also, has anyone already done the install and have any advice? I really like Lee's but they do not come with a cap.

I did a nice install with Lee swivel rod holders on my last boat but the water drainage was not a question in that case. Just seems to me that water that goes in those holders would drain into the foam between the hull and hull liner. If that is the case, how does that water get out?

Thanks,

Bluefin

Bluefin,
Some rod holders have small male drains on the bottom, which you can put a piece of 1/2'' tubing and run the water wherever you like, the usually is into the cockpit, with a stop and a single (smaller than the outside stop)drilled hole in the gunnel. It can be done without an access panel, using a coat hanger, and alot of patience.
The other solution is keep the cap on and dont troll in the rain.
There is a forum showing the drains holes for rod holders in this site somewhere, but I cant remember where I found it.

YES like he said you can install, with a rubber cap on the base. Triumph does exackly that....Then of course you can buy a cheap baster and suck out the water after cleaning or rain. That is what I do...no big deal.

when I installed my outrigger mounts they had open bottoms. I didnt want the water entering my hull foam so I put some duct tape over the end and sprayed it with rubber tool handle coating stuff ..(I forget the name of it right now). it made a nice rubber cover over the end. On one of the mounts I cut a thin plastic circle to cover the bottom before I sprayed it. I just suck the water out with my 1 gal wet vac or a baster if i even worry about it. I have pics inthe gallery of the mount and spray stuff.

Installing rod holders with drain tubes is difficult on Triumph Boats. Not that it can't be done. It would just be hard to do. You do not want your rod holders draining into the inter hull.
Wheel Bearing Buddy Covers will fit the ends of most standard rod holders. They are cheep and eazy to find. They will last for-ever installed on the end of a rod holder. You can use a little silicone or duct tape to insure that the bearing cover stays in place. This will keep the water from going into the inter hull and then you can remove the water when needed. Good suggestions above on how to remove the water. You want to make sure that you seal between the rod holder and the hull also when you install your new rod holders. Good Luck, Bob

Thanks for the information guys. The two existing rod holders were full of frozen water when the boat arrived. I am going to remove both and check the rail area and let the water evaporate naturally. We have some nicer weather coming this week and that should help. After it dries I will make the cuts and install the new holders and re-install the existing holders.

Thanks again.

I took the rod holders out and they had plastic cups "taped" to the bottom of the holders and no sealant between the rail and the holder. They must have leaked water into the foam for quite a while via the rod holders since the tape did not hold the water in the holder well. During my discovery in the area I found two small black plugs in the back lower hull. I unscrewed them and a small amount of water slowly drained from one side for a little while. I think these were installed by Truimph to assist in removing water from the hull liners and they work well. Nothing like going through your boat from top to bottom before taking her out. I am going to leave all the hatches and holes open and let the wind dry everything out. I can then install all the rod holders correctly and know it was done right.
