Question 195CC Suzuki 140 Trim Question

I have my 195CC with a Suzuiki 140 4-stroke (sea star hydrolic steering) in a slip and I can't trim the engine fully out of the water . It trims the prop out but there are still about 8 inches of "engine" in the water. The engine doesn't even go back as far as the flip down transom with the cup holders. It stops about 4 inches from the flip down "door". I'd like to trim the engine all the way out of the water to keep it out of the salt, to make it easier to run fresh water through it after a use, and to prevent marine growth. Does anyone know if there is a way to get my engine to trim all the way back? Hopefully I'm doing something wrong and it's not a design flaw. I notice all the other boats in my marina trim their engines all the way out of the water. Any thoughts or help are appreciated.

Thanks,

Noah

The problem can be one of two things, either motor is hitting something in the transom area and therefore not allowing the motor to tilt up all the way, or you are having trouble with the tilt portion of the trim and tilt mechanism. It maybe that the trim portion is working but the tilt pistons are not. In either case this should be a dealer issue, if you are binding on something, they may have mounted the motor too low on the transom. The tilt problem should be under warranty and could be an electrical issue or a hydraulic one.

Noah,

You may want to give your engine a closer look. On my 2005 140 Suzuki, just behind the tilt tube there is a limit switch that can be adjusted which limits the travel of the engine when tilted all the way to the up position. I would think its purpose is to limit travel so the engine cowling does not come in contact with anything. It is easily adjusted by moving the tab and it clicks through varies positions. I think it is referred to in the Suzuki manual as the "Tilt Limit Cam". Hope that helps!

Thanks. I'll check for that switch before calling the dealer.

Thanks there was a "trim tab" that was a pain to find but once I did it was easy to to fix the trim issue. The owners manual didn't do a good job of explaning where it was but you were right, you can move a tab that allows you to adjust the trim. Now everything trims out of the water. My dealer should have set it correctly from the start but no big deal now that it's fixed. Thanks again!

If anyone every need to find that trim tab on a Suzuki I'll be happy to try and explain where it is and what to do.

I'll try and take a pic this weekend.

It's place where you would expect to find a washer in the middle part of the transome. Mine was a small black tab that stuck out 1/8 of an inch. It's under the engine near the center of where it attaches and pivots on the transom. I was looking at the outer parts of where the engine connects but this is in the center part. If you are standing in your boat, facing the stern , stand to the right of the engine and look to your left as you bend down and see where it pivots. You should notice the tiny tab way in there. Move the tab down to trim further back. It moves very easily by hand and clicks into different spots. I found two "clicks" made a big difference in how far back it went.

Hope this helps. It's in the manual but the diagram could be any of a hundred places on one of those engines. Let me know if you find it

Noah,

Glad to hear that it was a simple fix. It is kinda hard to explain just where that adjustment is located. I tried to paste a link to the diagram from the manual but was unsuccessful.
