Question Anchor on 195CC

Most boat anchors have [at least] a 2' chain then the anchor line. The chain helps to set the anchor by putting it in the right position. By design, our boats can't have the chain because of the bow cleet that is used to secure the anchor.

Has anyone else wished there was a different design? Has anyone modified their anchor cleet in order to add a chain?

Just curious...

I have about 10' of anchor chain and a 195CC. I anchor a lot and found you can get away with a lighter anchor with more chain. I keep my anchor, chain, and rope in the right side fishbox right now. I'm thinking about moving it to the bowsprit later.I've got to make sure the chain is small enough to fall through the opening on the anchor roller. I may use a wire tie to secure the anchor chain to the cleat when I'm not using it. I'll let you know if I figure it out. Let us know what you come up with.

NJWardy,

I have a 195DC which I believe is the same as the CC, my setup includes the chain. I'm not sure I completely understand your issue, but I made a modification whereby I added a cleat on the inside of the anchor locker and tied off the rope inside the locker. The chain isn't an issue with the bow cleat in this setup and it's a little cleaner looking.

I take a short piece of bunge cord and thread it thru a link of the chain close to the anchor and tie a square knot in it to make a small loop that I then stretch to fit around the anchor cleat. It provides enough tension to keep the anchor snugly in place. It also goes down with the anchor. That really isn't a problem here in Ohio in fresh water, I don't know how long that would last in salt water though. But this is something I plan to put more thought into to come up with something better this winter. I'll let you know if I come up with something better. I also took a 26 X 2.125 bicycle inner tube and cut the portion out that has the valve in it. I then threaded my anchor chain thru it and slid it on the last 4 feet or so of the chain. It silences the chain and prevents it from scratching up the front area of the boat.

I like the idea of adding an additional cleet in the box! I think I will be giving this a try. I may even install the flush type...

Here's a pic. It doesn't show the added cleat, but gives you an idea.

I went out yesterday to a marine supply store and parused my options. I was considering the white vinyl covered anchor chain or the stainless chain. I am leaning towards 3 foot of chain and adding the cleet in the anchor box.

First off, I have never heard about "not" using any chain and I have had 2 of these boats. But if you want to save on your back, use a lighter anchor, and save on the amount of "Rode" (anchor line) you want to pay out to hold the boat into place, Then the longer the section of chain the better...

I used two 6 foot vinyl cover sections of chain together (should be some pictures in the 210 mods section of my old set-up), and was able to save on about 15% of the line I use to have pay out on my old 210 when fishing offshore many years ago.

Now I just push the button on my Power Pole to hold my boat into place

NJWARDY,
I'm like putershark. The more chain the better holding power you have. If you're anchoring in deep water (over 30') or in a strong current such as an inlet you will need the extra chain to set your anchor. the nylon rope has a tendency to float your anchor (shaft?) or lift it which pulls your anchor loose especially in sandy bottoms. You can get by with a lighter anchor and less rope with longer chain. I used 10' chain on my 170CC and still use that on my 195CC so far. I think I read where Genelie or someone uses 25' of anchor chain. If you are in a lake with no current I'm sure 3' would work okay unless you're caught in a storm with strong winds.

I was not provided a chain on my 195cc when I bought it. With the pulpit on the 195cc, I assumed it was a design feature. There is no way to secure the anchor on the pulpit with a chain on the standard cleet arrangement. I will need to add a cleet. Unless you have a way of doing it...hence the post.

I want a chain. I understand why I need a chain. Thank you for the replies!
