Some new modifications

I uploaded some pictures of some new additions to my 195cc. I made a mount for my Minn Kota power drive trolling motor, and a mount for my Big Jon planer board mast. I own a machine shop so I have all the toys needed to make some neat mods like this. I made the paterns out of wood first till I had it just the way I wanted them, then I made the finished products from aluminum plate. All thats left is to get them anodized and pick up the stainless hardware. The mast mount allows it to fold down along the bow rail for trailering by way of a stainless steel hinge, it can also be completely removed from the boat by just removing the hinge pin. I can't wait till spring to get back at those Lake Erie Walleye and Small Mouth Bass.

Wow! That's a killer set up. Great job! That's an interesting way to mount the trolling motor...I'm sure you're going to get a lot of requests for the pattern for the bracket...would you consider putting a drawing of it on this website along with a brief description of what you did?

I really like the planer board mast...those skittish Walleyes better update their life insurance policy. Thanks for sharing...I love seeing this kind of "thinking outside the box".

Tight lines.

So do you troll in reverse? I am unfamiliar with the walleye etc techniques. Thanks for sharing.

While some folks troll in reverse for Walleye, it's usually done directly behind the boat in order to present baits at a slower speed. His set up is designed to troll forward. A planer board is hooked to each side of the mast and carried out to the side. Fishing lines are then clipped to the planer lines and run out to the side...kind of like outriggers. The advantage of using planers is to get the bait away from the boat to catch spooky fish and to be able to troll in really shallow water while keeping the boat in deeper water. It's deadly effective for Walleye and Striped Bass. I hope this cleared that up for you.

There are two types of planer boards "in line" and "mast type". In line planers clip to your line once you have let out your lure to the desired distance back, then you let out more line and the planer then pulls your lure out away from the boat.

Here is a link to a great explanation with diagrams to the whole Mast type planerboard game. They refer to the planerboards as otterboats, which is this companys style of boards. I know someone that has a set of these otter boats and says they are only good for calm waters. http://www.bigjon.com/tips/tips.asp?ContentID=10

It is not uncommon to have your boards 100' or more out from each side of the boat.

Here is a link to the most comon type of planer boards used in conjuction with a boat mounted mast, here in the Great Lakes. http://www.mssfa.com/stplaner_board_plans.htm

FYI, Here are a couple of articles on Freshwater and Saltwater use of Planer Boards on my fishing site. We also sell this line of planer boards in our eStore.
