Don't count on the latches giving way first. I have had my 195 DC for almost a month now and have already managed to crack the cowling on my Yamaha F150. It is a small crack, and it is barely noticeable. I wont be buying a new cowling from Yamaha at $1000 but Yamaha will get some money from me for their matching paint. I had an auto body guy take a look at it who specializes in fiberglass, kevlar, and carbon fiber, he said it would be an easy fix. I almost wish it was under neath one of the graphics that way I could repair it, paint it, and hide all the evidence. So after the season I will send it in to get it patched up. It is a sickening sound to hear your outboard crunch against that transom door.

I may not wait until I install the holders to put the straps on.

Well, I just finished this project. I put 2 3-rod holder banks from Berkley (Gander Mtn.) on the folding transom door and I also mounted a cable from the transom door to the stern of the boat. The cable allows the folding transom door to fold down, but not all the way to the floor - much easier to deal with now.

I found a solution that was quick and easy. Purchased 2 solid black bungee's about 12" in length with S hooks at both ends. I just hook the end of each to one of the transom openings (slit for knife or hole for hooks) and attach other end to the transom door lock opening. Using same hooks insures that the bungess's hold the door level but keep it well of the deck for easy walking and cleaning. cheap and easy fix...if S hooks start to rust just replace!
Hope this helps someone out there...it is an annoying problem-John

So that's what those slits and holes are for... boy do I feel like a dope! You helped me, I couldn't figure out what those were.

I'll post some pics of my mod as soon as the weather clears up.

Old Barney, what I like about the way I solved this problem is that I don't have to worry about stowing a couple more bungees, the strap is just alway's there. Also, I was lucky enough to have the strap on hand (it used to hold the seat of an old Ford lawn tractor), I just purchased some stainless, nuts and bolts... a cheap fix to a frustrating situation.

I don't know the answer to your question, but even if I could limit the tilting, without opening up the transom door I couldn't tilt the motor up far enough to install the m-ywedge motor support.

My Cowling has a small dimple in it now because I forgot to unlatch the transom door when I trailered my 195DC. It is like the first scratch on a new car.... It hurts. Me and my Wife and Son are very aware of the situation and try hard to remember. Occasionally we will forget and remember just in time. In our case the latches have shown NO SIGNS of giving way under pressure. It will damage the engine cowl if you forget to unlatch the door. I too considered a bungie latch of some sort, but havent done it yet.

I finally got out there and took the pics of the transom strap and my rod holders mod.

Enjoy!
