Engine cowling touching fold down transom

I have a Yamaha F150 on a 195 DC and if you trim the motor all the way up it will hit the fold down transom if it isn't folded down. While I am conscious of the problem, I worry that I will get side tracked and trim up without thinking and break the $1000 cowling. I don't need that problem. Has anyone had this issue or designed a safety break away latch just in case?

Sinkorswim,
I've hit mine several times also. I had to buff out a scratch or two. It pained me so bad that I always leave the fold down transom down until I leave the boat ramp and I lay it down again as soon as I return to the ramp.I then leave it down until the next time.If I'm cleaning the boat and have to put it up for a few minutes I do not latch it.I would rather hear a loud noise when the motor knocks it down than hear a loud crunch when it cracks. I think its like the bilge plugs. You only forget to put them in before launching the boat a time or two.If you find a solution let us all know.

sinkorswin you can buy latches for storage lockers and fish boxes that have a rubber latch..one part of the latch is metal and the other is a piece of rubber about 3 in. long thats has a rubber ball on the end of it.the metal part mounts to bottom of the storage locker and the rubber part mounts to the top.the metal part has a cup on it that you pull the rubber ball down in to to lock it. it still might be to strong to let your transom door spring but it worth the try. you can get them at west marine are bass pro .. hope this helps

My son trimmed the motor up thinking he was doing me a favor and when I heard the hydrolics straining I looked and yelled and fortunately only bent the top of the transom door. It bent right back and no problems. But I could see how this could be a problem.

My 06 195cc has a bungee cord with stainless hooks on the door set-up from the factory that I was thinking of replacing with the stainless latches that the newwer models have. But now I can see the benifit of this. I went up to far once without looking, I heard a loud bang, the motor pushed the door about 1/4 of the way open then the hooks release the bungee and it just dropped to the floor.

It's interesting that you mention this. Just today I trimmed the motor up to remove the m-ywedge and forgot about the cowling being locked in. Well I went too far and the port side latch popped all four screws out. I wipped out my trusty leatherman and srewed them back in. I didn't have any sealant with me but the screws held fine. I will unscrew them and add some sealant shortly. No other damage occurred... thank goodness!

tfink,
Its good to know that the latch screws will give way first. I would hate to have to replace that motor cowling.

I really think Triumph should look into a fix, especially if it cost someone a 1k cowling. A simple breakaway latch may be the answer. Then again, if your foot is under the transom when it falls it probably would cause a limp for awhile.

I was thinking about putting a bank of 4-6 rod holders on the inside of the cowling, see the rack from Cabelas that I was looking at. Cabela's -- Polished Aluminum Rod Racks

After installing the rod holders I was then planning to install some simple straps on both sides of the cowling so it wouldn't fall down to the floor - like a tailgate on a pickup truck.

I may not wait until I install the holders to put the straps on.
