Problem fueling a 191FS?

Does anyone else have problems fueling a 2005 191FS? No matter how slowly I try to admit fuel while refueling, I always seem to get excessive back pressure which results in fuel overflowing from the fill port several times while fueling the boat. It does not seem to be related to outside temperature, or amount of gas already in the tank, and I have tried several different gas stations with the same result. If I ever have to tank up on the water, this could be a difficult process! The overflow drains right out of the back of the boat. Anyone have any insight?

I always estimate what it will take to fill, switch the key on and watch the guage and keep a listen in case I still can't get it right. Yes, there is nothing wrong with your boat - I think they all do this.

Cincinnati, thanks for the reply. This does not happen when the tank is getting close to full, it happens as soon as I start to fill it. It does not matter if the tank is 1/4, 1/2 or 3/4 full, I always seem to get excessive back pressure.

Just put 8 gallons in today to get sandbass tomorrow and it overflowed. I'm going to try what Cinncinatti does.

Okay - did you check the fuel vent to see if there is blockage? Air needs to escape in order for the fuel to replace the volume in the tank.

Seems like this may be a design issue. Has anyone had any experience using with a Racor Fuel/Air separator? I am certainly never in a hurry at a fuel pump....way to much can go wrong rushing! My concern is splashing fuel....esp. when at a fuel dock on the water. I have inspected the vent line and no kinks were found, as for blockages......not sure exactly how I could test for that.

Thanks!

Too many loops/sags?

I took another look at my vent line today and think the way the hose is run may be causing some of the problem. The vent line exits the tank and rises 4 to 5 inches and is looped over the fuel shut-off valve in the bilge. It then drops back down to almost the bottom of the bilge, creating a "U" or trap in the line and then rises back up runs across the top of the fuel tank to the fuel fill nozzle. I was thinking that the correct way for the vent line to be run would be for it to exit the tank, have a small inverted "U" and then run directly to the fill nozzle without ever dipping below the point that it exited the tank. The inverted "U" would hopefully not allow fuel to flow up the vent line and prohibit any water from flowing down the vent into the tank. Does the existing factory installation seem incorrect? Should I cut and re-route the vent to elimate the sag? With fuel at $2.66/gal in my neck of the woods, getting tired of wiping it up at the gas station!

Thanks

This seems like a queer setup. My vent is next to the gas cap. The hose that conncects to the vent is run parallel to the filler hose right into the tank under the console - a straight shot. My fill cap is mounted on the side of the console. I've not seen a 191FS up close, so can't think of how to fix your 'looping' hose issue. Certainly, any loops can hold water that gets in the vent and would block air flow back out of that vent when filling. Sounds like you've identified your problem.

I have the same problem..no matter how slow I go it will spray out...The only thing that seems to work is stopping every few seconds and letting it settle a little bit and then slowly filling it up. If someone knows the answer to this please tell us.
