What is the farthest you've been out?

I am ready to buy, just wandering how far the hardcore guys have been out. I really like the 215 for easy trailering, maint. and total cost next to the bigger more expensive boats. At the same time I need to make sure I won't outgrow her in one or two years. The majority of my fishing (for now) is within 30 to 60 miles out (local islands) in addition to an occasional river or lake run. (Southern Ca.) I know conditions dictate the distance most of all but just curious how far realistic #'s are for fuel and safety considerations.

Is there a thread or forum for So. Cal. owners? I would jump at the chance to go play for a day. I have no problem pitching in some $$$ for your troubles, Thanks.

Weekend before last, I ran 47 miles out of Cedar Key, FL. Ended up in 80 ft. depth. It was a flat calm day however, and other boats within a reasonable proximity if I had to make a call for assistance. I rely a lot on the "pucker factor". Depending on sea conditions, at the point I feel my rear end start to pucker up, then I've gone out far enough. I have an '04 210. Tight lines and stay safe.

Hey Tunaboyyy,

It sounds to me like you already know the answer to your question. You realize that the ocean conditions and your calculated range (fuel quantity vs. consumption) are your limiting factors. As far as the boat itself, it is up to the task safety wise, I think. I run my '04 210CC out of Oregon waters for halibut and salmon. I have fished for many years here in various boats. Bigger and smaller. I have no problems using the Triumph to go out 30 miles or more. Of course I always watch my weather and water conditions so as to not expose myself unneccessaily to trouble. The Triumph is as unsinkable as they come. It does not roll excessively in rough water (low center of gravity). If you have trust in your engine (and the USCG) these boats are up to the trip.

And on another subject, when and where do you have the best luck for tuna. I have family in Santa Barbara and want to bring my boat for some fishing. What are the basics as far as time of year, location etc?

Good luck on making your decision to buy. If you get a ride in a 210 you will like it.

Codfish.

I regularly ran over 45 miles out from the dock into the Gulf of Mexico and have gone up to around 75 miles out with a buddy boat. I think my longest round trip was like 176 miles in a day on a 2003 210. I never worried about the boat because it would not sink. I did leave the 140 4 stroke running from the time I left the dock until I returned though. That way if it shut off I would know I had a problem. I also had radar and from time to time took a satt phone with me for saftey (just incase).

my average run OUT HERE IN SUNNY SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA is about 100 miles round trip. I have gone farther...but not as far as tums did. No Radar...just a good radio and GPS. out here you get to know of other boaters, all will lend a hand if need be.

hey randy
with everyone getting such great distances, do you think it would be a good idea to have a forum where we can put our boat trip plans on and that way family members would know where their loved ones were scheduled to be on the water on any given day. the owner could then delete each trip once he has returned safely. i thought i saw this feature on somebodys site but i cant remember where
just a thought. know i would use it eventho alot of folks deviate from their orig. plan it couldnt hurt.

we often have to go up to 40 miles one way up the beach to va. border looking for stripers in the winter.
the gulf stream can be as far out as 50 miles and i know of 210s going that far on good weather days.

GGC

Nice idea GGC. I'll create a custom database form that members can email or print before leaving. I'll let you know when I come up with it.

You mean kind of like a float plan page. One could fill out the blanks online then pirnt it out, or pirnt out the form and fill out then leave with family.

Randy,
Here's one my local club uses to help get it started. Feel free to modify it as you see fit.
