Smile Rust under the"Glob"

I have a small problem with my 2004 210 and I wonder if anyone else has this one.

Looking into the deck inspection door to the bilge pump area there is a lot of rust stains that appear to be coming from under the “glob” of sealant on the center rib. I understand this "glob" covers the stainless steel plate on the center rib. The area on each side of the rib holds water due to height of bilge pump and placement of hull drain plug.

I have also noticed that the water draining from my self-installed transom drain plug has produced a rusty stain on the transom and trailer and never stops. So this means water is leaking into the hull from around the plate. Right?

My question, how have other folks cured this? I plan to dig out the factory sealant and start over unless advised otherwise.

Has anyone contacted the factory about a problem of this nature? How can I stop the water from standing in these areas?

Thxs

Recycle, I'm not sure what the rust colored stain is, I have seen this in a couple other boats but we did nothing to clean it. We think it's a chemical reaction with something. It's not rust. The boat probably is takeing on water somewhere other than the top of the center stringer, don't dig it out, it runs under the fuel tank also. Check the thru hull fittings. Make sure that the plugs are in the rod holders. If you have installed drains in the fish boxes, check the holes for foam. It might be a process of elimination. keep me informed on your progress.

RECYCLE. Check it out the best you can, its STAIN____LESS, NOT RUST PROOF It can and does corrode. Much slower yes. But if you look under any old SS sink you will see rust if, its used in a damp, wet location, restaurant ect. If fresh water takes years. Salt, whole different story. Check it with a GOOD strong maganet, Poor stainless,, it will stick. Good stainless,, it will not stick.

I had water flowing in a small crack on the underside of my hull thru my inner hull and out passed the stringer into my bilge. I found it by opening my bilge cover while up on plane and removing the brass drain plug. (you could pull up the whole rear deck portion by pulling the screws and lifting the deck up when you are ready) Almost all the water is sucked out of the bilge at this point. You have to have someone else drive the boat so you can stick your head in the bilge and see where the water is moving around. In my case I could see it flowing upward thru the sealant around the center stringer. Johnson Marine fixed my hull under warranty and added sealant to the stringer. I don’t get much water from my inner hull drains any more. If you decide to try this be sure to replace the drain plug BEFORE you drop off plane or water will flood in the bilge. I located the hull crack by finding a small streak of rust left by stained water seeping out of the crack while the boat was on the trailer.
Good Luck
Victor

Thanks for the reply’s guys. Here’s where I stand. I removed the rear deck plate for better access and punctured the “glob” with a knife and somewhat like a blister she began to run water from the puncture.

I cut the glob away and found the (stainless) plates. There are actually two plates bolted together. The plate has rust approx. ¾ 0f the way up. There is a gap on each side of the plate between the plate and the plastic.

I don’t know how far this plate and it’s corresponding ditch runs up the hull but as Dick said it goes under the gas tank and has rust as far as I can see.

The boat bow has been elevated enough to put sawhorses past the winch. We have been running water from the ditch for two days, slowly; it runs enough to flow out the bilge drain into a bucket.

I feel the entire length of the plate ditch is full of water. But where is it coming from? Apparently the Rule goo is not good enough or applied properly to seal the ditch. I think the water into the mega hatch may get in the ditch and also gets into the foam at the transom.

This could be a source of water we always contributed to the rod holders.

Does anyone have a number for customer service at Triumph.

I have photos in the Gallery showing the glob as I found it to what I have now. Sorry the shots loaded right to left. I hope you can figure them out. Any suggestions Dick?

PS: Calico everything looks good from the bottom.

i think most of the water draining from the channel is from wherever the rule failed to seal the strap to the ditch and the bilge water has seeped into the channel. on the '01s the bilge pump hose ran across the strap and over time chaffed away the rule so as to allow water to seep into to channel and get to the s.s. strap.

i have not seen enough of the new models, but it appears you have found the source of the bilge water intrusion based on the pics of the glob. BTW, the mega drains directly into the bilge and hopefully dick at mm can verify that so i dont think the water is from there---just what has seeped into the channel from where the rule failed. again this is based on my experience with the '01s . there are many design mods since '01, however, i think that stringer process has remained the same throughout the model years . with the smaller gas tanks on the current models , you would think there would be better sealant coverage and the factory would be more cognizant that the seal there needs to be perfectly done to keep what happened to you from happening.

GGC----dancing and enjoying it more as the avitar can attest and fishing less!!!!!LOL

I appreciate the input folks. The stainless is the very good kind. The magnet did not stick and was very strong. It's used to retrieve objects from the water.

I feel OK now I talked to the local dealer and he's going to take care of it in the near future. You can't beat a good dealer who is also a good person.

I'll keep you posted.
