Removing the Factory Rod Holders - thread from the old site

From: Recycle727 (Original Message) Sent: 6/7/2004 9:15 PM
Does anyone have a trick for removing the factory rod holders from the gunnels? I want to seal the bottom to prevent water from getting to the foam and I'm not having much success. Thanks, ReCycle

Yes, try this, ever so gently after taking the 3 screws that hold it to the boat out, pry up a little at a time around the edges with a large flat blade screw driver. Then once you can get a grip on it, twist and turn until you can break it free, then pull it out.

Recycle, let me know how it goes, I'd like to do the same. How are you going to seal it? I only have one cap for my rod holders, previous owner lost the other one, would love to know where I could find a couple replacement caps as I store it outside and every time it rains water goes into holder.

I just removed one of mine last week. After I unscrewed the rod holder, I took a wood chisel and carefully pried up on the holder. I worked my way around the holder prying a little each time until finally it came out.

I did this on my Chaos. I don't recommend a screw driver, but rather a putty knife that you can slide under to "cut free" the rod holder from the top of the gunnels. The wide blade will have less of a stress on the Perko rod holders. Again, this assumes that your rod holders were installed prior to the foam being injected. If not (my forward gunnel rod holders were obviously installed after the foam), then removal will be EASY. If they are "foamed in", removal will NOT be easy. LogicDaves suggestion is a good one; try to "break the bond" of the foam by twisting/rotating the rod holder and then pull it out of the gunnel while rotating. A fat dowel rod with the end notched out like a cross (or you could use a fishing pole with the appropriate notched butt end) could help do this. I ended up replacing my two rear rod holder flap caps (purchased from Perko) because mine were pretty chewed up after this exercise. Good luck!! Eric

Hi Guys, Sorry it took so long to reply but my computer ran into the dreaded ID 10 T virus.

As for the rod holders, no such luck. I can't budge them and I'm worried about ruining the rod holder flange. Any more suggestions? Thanks, ReCycle

Guess what folks,

I still have not been able to get them out!! I'm afraid I will destroy them.

Welcome home.
