Access points at rear of 215

I ordered my 215 with the bolsters. Without having to pull the rear side bolster off, can someone tell me if, once removed, there is access to the underside of the rear cleats? I'd like to change the standard cleat to a folding one but the new cleats require access from underneath.

Obviously, the other option would be to cut an access hole and then install a cover plate but if access is already available it would be nice to know.

I've already removed the rear starboard bolster (only one screw necessary to remove) that acts as a seat back next to the engine. No access there!

Jerry, The Bolsters are held on by clips and screws thru the grommet holes. No access plates are under them. The factory cleats use a molded in special nut that have a high pull out rating. I dont know of a folding cleat that has the same bolt pattern. A access hole is probably the only way to go, a Toggler might work but I'm not sure of the pull out rating.

Dick, thanks for the reply. I figured out how the bolsters are attached and they should be easy to remove for the installation of the folding cleats. I'll have to mark the bolsters before removing and then cut access points so that I can reach the underside of the cleat for fastening the new cleats in place.

Even though the access holes will be covered by the bolsters, I'll still make covers for them out of Starboard and glue and screw them into place with stainless screws and Rule. Actually I'd rather use Ropelene if it can be bought in 1/8th inch sheets.

I did notice from when I pulled the starboard stern bolster that if I ever decide to remove the bolsters, I'll need to make a series of cover plates to cover the clip holes. I can hot-weld the screw holes.

What blade do you recommend for cutting with a saber saw. I would expect a coarse wood blade since the ropelene is soft and a fine blade would heat it up too much and melt it.

How about making so sort of smooth shaped cover for the cleat and use when needed. I know you have a fly line snag problem. May be a lot easier in the long run.

P.S. I attached a photo of a quick idea. Used some pipe insulation tubing, crude but could work with some work.

PPS - I see from the later thread that you have already thought of the obvious. I applaud your effort. Sure would like to see what the finished product looks like. Good luck. How about a little info on your fly fishing endeavor also. I for one would be very interested in your technique. I fish for Coho with a 9 weight rod and large arbor reel. Also use it to live bait for salmon. What a thrill.
