Help for newbie looking to buy 02 210cc
Hi all,
Help! I am a newbie looking to buy a 02 210cc. The seller does not have much info on the boat as it was a repossessed. From seller: "Boat needs new gauges and the bait tank plumbing redone. Do not know history as the boat is a repossession. Engine started easy and runs fine. Needs new control cables. Do not know hours on motor." What should I check out when I go see the boat? What was the standard equipment for a 02? Is there a link somewhere? What is the best way to check the motor? Is there a way to see how many hours are on the 140hp Suzuki? Should I ask to tow it to a shop for inspection? Is the 02 model solid (hull, etc) or should I be looking for a newer boat? Whats the max I should I pay for this boat? Given that it all checks out, what am I looking at to replace the gauges, control cables and put on a T top? I will be using this boat to fish offshore out of Santa Cruz, Ca. Thanks in advance for your help, Mike |

Mike - I have an 03 210 that I bought used. I live close to you - in the santa cruz mtns. Feel free to call me 650.776.2416 as there is more to cover than my fingers allow. Tach, if functional, should be able to tell you engine hours (at least in 03s). Call Triumph with hull number to see if warranty xfer possible. Even tho repo, you should find a way to get ahold of prior owner.....Good luck.....Barry

Hello, I too was looking at this boat. At first they were asking $9k and now they are asking $9,800. They told me that everyting was working except for the bait pump and the fish finder (could not start the motor as they had no keys)....I would recomend having them launch it for you. (I already opted for a boat that was functional). I know some about boats, and this one was over my head....too many unknowns. Wiring can be a pain in the @#$%^&*. It is not trailered correctly...tag on another $500 or so and thats if you do it yourself. Don't forget the electronics...another $800 - $1,000 again DIY....this is just to start They also told me there were no brakes on the trailer....not good unless you have a large truck. If you want brakes...look at another $1,500...again this is all just to start Not sure how they told you the engine runs fine, they told me they could not get a key to start it. I think they are bidding out the process.
Never the less, if you are a newbie to boating, a fixer will be a nightmare unless you are really good. The only way you may come out ahead is to do everyting yourself...if it goes into a shop....your total cost will probably exceed $20,000 when you can get a good 2002 for around $16k with a 4-stroke (not including the T-Top of course) My suggestion, either look to get something used in good condition or work with the dealer to make sure everyting is functional and working before you leave the premisis (including the correct trailering)...then see how much they will charge you. Don't forget, there will also be an additional $800 - $1,000 or so for electronics and $1,500 for brakes. This way, all of the guess work will be taken care of. |

That boat would be underpowered with that Suzuki. See if you can purchase the boat with trailer without the motor, spend a little more and put a new Yamaha F150 on the back.
Used boat can be a great deal, but if the owner couldnt make monthly payments on it, highly doubt they could afford the maintenance on it as well. Buyer beware! Have someone knowledgeable go over the boat or hirer a surveyor prior to purchase. |
