215 Foul water in transom wells

Dick-

I took off one of the covers in the well area. At the bottow was a couple inches of black water. I cleaned and then resealed lid and put back in screws.

Q. Is this normal? Why would the factor not provide a better seal?

Boat is 2006 215 cc.

Thanks in advance.

WALKERM, It's not unusual to find water in those wells. Many owners have installed inspection plates to keep a check on that area and to remove any water that accumulates there. I can't answer the second part to your question.

Walkerm,

This water retention problem has been around with all the 210/215 models since their inception. You ask a valid question about why hasn't the factory better solved this over the years. They obviously have just not put any effort into it. Shame on them, it is a solvable problem in my opinion.

To help you out, search the threads for "transom well" and "transom void" subjects. Several of us have posted photos of our attempts at repair on this problem. The install of inspection plates, which allow easy access to the void area whenever you want to check them, is the most popular fix.

I have them and did the install myself. The seal is better than the factory work but they still leak. Removal of the water is easy though, either with a sponge or a wet/dry vacumn.

Let us know how you solve this.

if i had a do over, i would have gone with a 200hp 2 stroke etec or hpdi for the low end torque to push thru our inlets and 4 ft chop in the sounds here in NC-the 140 would be fine for protected waters ,rivers , gom, and lakes ,but i would rather have the "go" when i need it. each application is unique to the owner--- just think through where and what you intend on using the boat for..
