140 vs 175 vs 200

I have a 215 with a Suzuki 140. I am happy with the performance when I am alone on the boat. However when I am tuna fishing offshore, I would like to have a bit more power for pushing a load of ice and tuna. Its also very sluggish with 6 or more people on board. I found new Suzuki 175s $10,299 and the 200s for a thousand more. If anyone has an advice, it would be appreciated. I want to stick with the Suzuki so I can bold bolt it right on. I have just under 300 hours on mine and it has operated flawlessly.

Thanks
Bob

maybe it is just me, but if I could get the 175 for 10299 and the 200 for 11299 I would go for the 200. I have not heard anyone complain of having to much horsepower. Plus the motor will not have to work as hard to do your bidding
Of course it still needs to meet the weight limits for the boat

I agree with Dick and like I tell most people, whatever the plate says for max grunt (HP) is what you should hang on it

Boats don't "coast" very far (unlike your car) as you well know when you let off the power... And I would much rather have the larger HP engine not working as hard to push it, then a smaller engine working harder and many times burning more fuel (running @ higher RPM) to run the same ground speed due to having to use a smaller pitch prop.

SportFishing Mag Jan 2007 issue is out and has a buyer's guide with weights and horsepower. Nice to just look and compare. Suzuki 140 is a great for the weight, lighter than the 115 and 90! with more power. The DF 175 TLK7 weighs 465lbs while the DF200 TXK7 is 580lbs....same as the 225 and 250.

So that is 115lbs difference between the 175 and 200 so it would be best to go to the 225 or 250 if possible but the hp rating is kinda low on Triumphs.

Bob5292, how fast do you want to go? I have the 175 on my boat and can give you some exact measurments. I have a fuel meter as well so I can give you the MPG numbers also.

Doesn't the 580 pounds on the 200 go over the transom limit?

Thanks for the help. I completely forgot to think about the weight issue, so it looks like I can only go up to the 175 if I want to stay with Suzuki. Its no so much about top speed. I mainly need the extra horses for when the boat is loaded with 8 or more people or if I am fishing offshore and am loaded down with ice and fish. I really wish the dealer wasn't quoting me 4.5k to go from 140 to 175. Ordering online, the price difference is only 2k. If I end up keeping the boat, I will probably just repower at the end season when I have 500 hours on my 140. Otherwise its an awfully expensive deal for 35hp.

Bob, did the dealer bait and switch. In your original post you said the dealer's price on the 175 was $10,299. That's one heck of a price! Now he wants 4K more? I'd offer to split the difference. That still would be one heck of a deal.

From what I've read about the 140 performance, you'll be very disappointed. I have the 175 and would not want one horsepower less. A 140 with eight people will be a real dog.

No, when I bought my 215 last January the dealer was very starighforward but seemed to be making all of thier money on the motor. The dealer I found with the 175's for $10,299 is online.

I have a 2006 215 and got the 150 upgrade..... I usually fish with 4 people in long island sound and love the performance and power. I can do what the 175does using less gas but have more power than the 140..... I sold a 65mph bass boat and don't see the need for that kind of speed in waves of 2-4 feet. ( my old bones couldnt take the pounding anymore)
