speedometer not working

Any ideas on why the speedometer guage would suddenly not work on my '06 215? Where is the device located that picks up the speed of the boat and how does it work?

On previous boats, I am familiar with the little gizmo that is screwed on the back of the boat and sticks just below the hull to pick up the speed, but this boat doesn't have one.

I have a 170cc with a 70 hp yamaha. The speedometer pickup is in the motor itself with a small hole that gets clogged very quickly. After unclogging several times i have given up and just use my gps for speed.

Speedo input is in the engine (if using the stock lower unit) gear case. Many times they just get plugged up with sand and crap and stop working. Since you did not state what kind of engine you have, I would look in the manual to see if you can find the location of the speedo input, and blow it out with a water hose

Look to see where the tube for the speedo connects to the motor...usually about 1/2 way down on the lower unit. Just below that there will be a little hole in the lower unit....that hole is what gives the speedo its information (water/air pressure). Check to see if that hole is clogged. If not, trace the tube back to see if any connectors are loose or if you have a hole in the tube. That should have you back in business in no time.

Speedometer Not Working

I concur with CJ413, it plugs up a lot, I now just use the GPS instead.
