where to mount gps puck/vhf radio advice
Hi folks, I just bought a lowrance LCX 27c with an external antennae (puck) Could somebody give me advice on the best place to mount the puck on my 210. I do not have a T top. Also looking for advice on a good high quality vhf radio and antennae. Are the ones in cabelas or bass pro shops any good? I'll be mostly inshore fishing between Rockport and South Padre Island Texas. However I will also go offshore on nice days (with a buddy boat). Thanks in advance.

Though a little hard to pick out, if you look at the top of the console rail (on the port side) where the Bimini top supports are standing, you will see the cone shaped mount that held the GPS receiver...
http://www.triumphowners.net/photos/...954/ppuser/116 The wires were then ran down the grab rail and wire tined into place. May not be the best place to locate one, but was the highest solid location on the boat at the time

I also mount the antenna on the top of the grab rail, height is not an issue with sat antenna, they actually prefer lower with out compromising line of sight. I did see someone who mounted it right on the top of the lock box, but could not find it. Another consideration is keeping the vhf and sat wires as far apart as possible. When looking for a vhf, DSC is a fearture we all should have, it connects to the gps and will tranmit your location in digital form in an emergency.
Hope it helps and good luck. |

OK Dave, hope this helps.
VHF Radio’s, they are the one problem I had with my initial electronics purchase. We started out with an ICOM M502. It was very highly ranked on every web site and almost everyone I talked too. After sending it in to have factory service, it still failed to work more often than not. To us, having a good working VHF radio is a real big safety issue. Therefore, the ICOM is just sitting on our workbench gathering dust, and we installed a Standard Horizon Quest GX1255S. It works for us every time, and has never failed us once. Either the ICOM was just a lemon, or the factory did not know how to test and repair it. Other ideas for you to consider are; Purchase the best antenna that you can. To us, they are a big part of how your radio works and how far it can transmit and receive. Because of our radar arch and other limitations, we went with four-foot antennas. If I were mounting the antenna on the CC grab rail, I would have picked a taller antenna. For the VHF, we have a DIGITAL 528-VW 4' VHF (white) #16180. It came with 15' of Digitals exclusive low loss, UV stable RG-8X marine cable. For our AM/FM radio, we chose a DIGITAL 531-AW AM/FM (white) Antenna 4' #16276. Hope my experience helps others.
