I checked with my dealer, Merritt Marine, to make sure their recommendation concurred with mine. Top off the fuel so the tank is full. You don't want to leave alot of room in the tank for condensation to build up. Then add a fuel stabilizer. Check your engine user manual for a recommendation and follow directions to add enough stabilizer to handle the amount of fuel in the tank. I've used Stabil and other products. I would recommend filling up the tank, adding the stabilizer then hooking the hose up to your motor and running it for about 5 minutes to get the new fuel/stabilizer thru the system. Be sure to store with the motor down in order to drain any water that might be in the lower unit. You don't want any water in there to freeze. Also loosen the lower screw in the lower unit to check to see if any water comes out. If there is any water in your lower unit you need to have it checked and replace the lower unit oil. If there is any water in there it can freeze over the winter and damage your lower unit. Hope this helps.

Tim,
I have used Startron stabilizer, its an enzyme based additive that conditions and treats fuel, as well as water problems, and is good for a year which is more than we would need. Alot of additives contain alcohol, and with 10% alcohol already in our fuel, we dont want or need anymore. The problems with alcohol is it breaks down rubber seals and older fuel lines that are still on some older boats. Good luck Fella |
