Smell of Gas

I picked up my new to me 2002 210cc on Monday as the storms rolled in. While going through it I opened the little door on the front of the CC and it smells of gas. Is that normal? Plenty more questions to come...

dakineyj, congratulations on your "New" boat.

Try using the "Search" feature at the top. I tried the words "gas smell" and found 31 different Threads. One of the best was gasoline smell in the console .

The "Search" feature really does work on this web site.

Again, congratulations and welcome.

The Roplene the boats are made from is low density Polyethylene, the same material Visene nasal spray bottles are made from. This plastic does not outgas any strong fumes.

The smell in the bilge is from the slight permeability of the plastic fuel tanks, and it's common on all boats that use them. That's why cabin models use aluminum tanks.

The key is that the odor should be muted, the same way something smells when it's dried after having gasoline spilled on it. An actual leak produces a very strong odor that carries the full noxious punch of raw gasoline.

Thank you for the replies. I have found that when the little door is opened for a minute the smell subsides rather quickly so I have come to the conclusion that it's the boat. I may be overly sensitive to this as one of the problems with the last boat was a gas leak...

Thank you Swamp Bear for that succinct explanation. Certainly makes plenty of sense.
