Well, here is my 2 cents on the subject. I'm not sure what type of outrigger you are mounting but I used only one toggler, centered on the mounting plate, and four corner screws to mount the swivel base for my Cannon downriggers. I use a 12 lb weight with the boom extended to 3 or 4 feet and have had no flexing or loosening of the bases. I know you cannot use a center toggler since you are putting in a rod holder type base but I would think four togglers would do the job easily and may be considered overkill. I would also want to support the bottom end of the rod holder tube even if only by refilling the void with new foam insulation. Anything to distribute the forces over the largest area. codfish

Did you ever finish mounting your downrigger base plate. How did it work out, and what did you use. I am in the process of doing a mounting plate for my Scotty electric downrigger.

yes I did and they turned out good. I used 4 togglers on each plate. Overkill, but those plates are down solid and not going anywhere. I mounted them without cutting an access panel in the gunwhale. The hardest part of that was clearing out enough foam for the togglers to pull up flat inside. I also coated the bottom of the base with rule before I mounted it. NO way water is getting in under the bases. I posted some picks of some of the parts I used. I sealed the bottom of the rigger bases so that water would not enter the gunwhales. I also use foam practice golf balls to pulg the top opening when not in use.

Hi Dick.
You saw how my dealer did the mounting for my downriggers. If it was my boat, I would want the outrigger rod holder bases installed the same way. Yes, that does involve cutting that hole. Sorry, but that is my vote.
