First Kill, or "I just ate a $13,000 Lobster"

OK, Bought my new 2002 210 in January. Since then it has been killing me to see it sit in the driveway, suffering from a combination of waiting for titles, bad weather (winter, who knew?), work and family commitments and most frustrating of all, water in the gas problems.

Now, spring has sprung, the days are getting longer and I think I have the machine running properly. Yippee.

A couple of weeks ago, on a shakedown run, I put some lobster traps out. Finally, yesterday I got out to check them and came home with 11 nice little bugs. Good dinner in the neighborhood.

So, the bad news is that the first lobster cost me $13,000. The good news is that the others were free!

Yippee! Spring is here and the fish are coming back... Now I just have to get the boat clean!

I hope this is the first of many good days with your new boat. I just got my 2005 170cc in March also, but have had some good weather resently. I've been out @ 7 times now. Nice catch, save some for me. We will be vacationing up your way this coming September.

Those lobster will get cheaper as you amortize them over the years.

They're all free. If we start adding up the cost of boat, fuel, batteries, bait, equipment, etc. we would never be able to justify the cost of a delicious dinner. Those bugs are just a by-product of an enjoyable day on the water...time spent de-programming from all the stress and pressures of daily life. You didn't buy the boat to get a lobster dinner, you bought it to enjoy time on the water. Those lobsters are merely a bonus!

BTW...my email must be down because I didn't get the invitation to help you eat all of those "free" bugs!

Strange, our Florida "Bugs" don't have claws. Lobster's travel well in a cooler with ice...

Better invest in a gauge, looks like you have a few shorts in there. (The one on the far left looks like a crawdad). The warden could make your fishing kinda expensive. 3 1/4" shell is legal. You should also "BAND" your lobsters, not only so they won't latch down on you or your crew but they are cannibals and will eat and crush each other. (They don't play well together)

Hey! I have a gauge! They were all legal! A couple were not legal when I threw them back last fall but they are now (by 1/32"). I actually threw a few back that were not legal... I have a license too!

I also usually band them but my bands and pliers (what do you call the band stretcher anyway?) are stilll on my buddys boat in storage from last fall (the old dark days before I had my triumph). I know they will eat each other, but not in 1 hour in a cooler... If me or my crew gets snapped, then it seems fair since we ate all of them.

OK, I have to go get back on the treadmill now, I ate a stick of butter with them a few days ago.

hay guys would any of you be interested in tradeing some of them bugs for some good gulf red snapper. we dont have lobster down here and i love lobster. i will have to wait untill snapper season opens. and of course you will have to throw in the butter. but we can do some tradeing lb. for lb. i will even clean them for you... you know drum felays look just like snapper felays if you clean them just right .just kidding

Wait untill this summa'. I'm hearing that the boat (wholesale) price for Maine lobsters will be around $3.00 a pound. Right now they are a little above $5.00. Last year at this time they were around $10.00. No one is buying them, they are worried about buying milk and bread never mind lobster. I'll keep you posted. I'm getting myself a nice 2 pounder tomorrow night.

The news this week showed one of the Lobster boats on Cape Cod selling direct to the customers. Had 'em lined up on the dock. Maybe they do that every year? I don't know but the news was reporting it as a sign of the times, that the lobster fisherman were eliminating the middleman to cover fuel costs. They were selling for $8/lb
