Downrigger mounting

I may have a set of downriggers being given to me. This is a new concept for us. I have seen in Cabelos the use of rod holders as a mounting location called a gimble. I would like input on this before possibly purchasing it.

Downriggers are GREAT tools.

Please check the "Articles" section. Additions & Modifications to our 2005 Triumph 210 and My Downrigger Setup on My 210 .

They are at least starting places.

ALSO - Please PLEASE try the "Search" feature. It really does work. I found 60 threads with the word downrigger mentioned.

Thanks I saw several posts on donwnrigger mounts. I did not see any that mounted on a platform the went into a pole holder. See photo below. I do not know if I am going to do a lot of down-rigger fish so I want to try it before hard mounting them to the boat. They are called Gimball mounts. Sorry if I was not clear about my question.

Gimball may work. Just not sure. Do know that we have gotten hung up on the bottom before and were sure glad our mounts were secure.

After some of our experiences, I am glad I have what I do. NOT saying something else will not work.

Just like some of my other "stuff". Could have just used Rule and some screws, but our choice was thru bolts, big stainless washers, and lock nuts. It may be overkill, but I do not worry about anything comming loose at the wrong time.

Besides, I am guilty of just really enjoying messing around with the boat. Trying to make it better with all that we do.

Hi gsdiener. I used gimbal mounts for my Canon downriggers on my first Triumph 210 and they worked fine. I added stainless steel clips near them to secure them and make sure they didn't bounce out of the rod holder if we hit a good wave going out. On my Triumph 215 though I used the Titelok track mounts with stainless steel toggle bolts to anchor them. I was much happier with the look and the performance of the track mounts. But if you're not going to use downriggers often I think either solution will work. I have a good friend that king mackerel fishes all the time and he uses one downrigger in a gimbal mount.

GSDIENER - I've used gimble mounted Penn's on my 210 for 4 years. Love 'em. I snapped one of the plastic gimble fins in my rod tub when I snagged a ball on the bottom - replaced them with an appropriately sized stainless screw. You'll like them......Barry

Gimbal mounts

I really like my gimbal mounts for versatility. I use my boat for a variety of activities and with a "smaller" boat it is nice to be able to clear some room when you can. The track mounts look good but I personally have only one spot I might want to place them. I am actually thinking of welding a stainless bracket to the rear seat rails later when I get better down riggers. I will admit to hitting bottom several times but thankfully have not been "Hooked Up".
