Boat listing to port
Gentlemen, I've just purchased a 235CC. We've taken it out twice with the first run very short lived due to excessive listing to port when coming onto plane and subsequent running. I contacted the dealer who in turn contacted the factory rep. We took the boat out for its second run two weeks ago with the rep on board. My purpose was to determine whether it was me or the boat. coming out of the no wake zone, the rep goes full throttle, to boat immediately lists excessively to port and determines that perhaps the pitch of the prop was not allowing us to come our of the hole quick enough and suggested that the prop change from a 19 pitch to a 17 pitch. When we got into open waters, we were constantly working the trim tabs trying to bring things to a balance point. Waters were relatively calm. After coming back to the ramp and loading the boat on the trailer, we noticed that the front starboard hull was indented about 1" over a 2 foot square area just below the water line of the boat. The port side was convex and proportioned as it should be. Given the above information, what is causing the boat to list excessively to port. I balance the passengers correctly, the fuel tank is full, yet I'm very leary to take the boat out until these issues are resolved. Also, there are a number of quality control issues that were pointed out to the rep, the majority of which I'm sure can be addressed by the dealer. My prime concern is the balance of this vessel in the water and the safety of my people on board.

I have been running my 235 since April. I have not experienced your issue but have experienced a holeshot issue. I am running a 19 inch and find it tough to get on plane, 7-8 seconds, with anyone in the stern of the boat even with engine and trim tabs down, 3-4 seconds with 2 onboard. I would be interested in the factory's or anyone response that has gone to a 17" and how the boat handles and RPM it generates. I am turning 5800 to 5900 with the 19" that seems correct. This is carrying about 60 to 80 galloms of fuel worse with full tank.
Hope you get the issue resolved soon. |

Hi Greg,
What motor are you running? Horse power wise? According to the Triumph web site, the specs state the 23.5 uses a max 300HP motor. I have found that dealers put on lower power motors to reduce the cost of the boat, however, sometimes, that leaves the boat a bit underpowered. Example, my dealer sells the 170CC with a 60HP 4 stroke motor. I wanted a 2 stroke with the max. HP available for my boat. So I opted for the 70HP since Yamaha doesn't make a 75 (max for my boat) in 2 stroke. The extra 10 horses and the reduction of 100lbs off the transom makes for a quick small boat.

The boat is rated for 300HP. It was sold to me with the Yamaha 250 four stroke. Seems like a good motor. We're going to try the 17 pitch prop to try and get out of the hole quicker.

50 More Horses...
Check out:
Yamaha Outboard Motors Home - Outboards, Boat Motors, Marine. The Yamaha web site has performance bulletins that will give you an idea of where your boat should be. Yamaha has a F-300 monster at 822lbs. Your F-250 is 604lbs with an RPM range between 5 - 6K Big difference and your boat is limited to 750lbs. For comparison: The Yamaha V-Max 300HP 2 stroke weighs in at 539lbs with an RPM range of 4.5 - 6K. OC Tim's boat runs the upper end of RPM at WOT with a 19 inch prop. If he changes to a 17 inch prop, his RPM may jump to about 6300. Not good for the motor! I went from a 15 inch prop with max RPM about 6000 to a 17 inch prop with a max RPM of 5600. Since the motor is rated 70HP at 5,500, I figured anymore RPM would be useless and I would use more fuel. I keep the 15 for a spare. Many ways to build a boat. One other question, does the boat list or pull? I had to adjust the trim tab on the motor to counteract the rotation of the prop. When the lower unit is trimed up correctly, I can remove my hands from the stearing and the boat will track straight, before the adjustment, the boat pulled to Starboard. Hope this helps.

Will do...........I'm scheduled to bring it back to the dealer in a week. We're going to change out the prop. I'll let you know if it makes any difference.
