somewhat urgent help needed

Well I finnaly got my boat unfroze and towed 1200 miles to Naples Fl. Due to temps and the boat being froze up I was unable to do the normal prep I do before a long tow. While enroute I found my bilge pump was still a block of ice, by batts were dead, and my hydrolic steering was not working to turn the motor. I got into naples today and the bilge was thawed and I got the boat plugged in to charge the batts. The hydrolic steering started working in the warmer weather and I checked the fluid level and needed to add some. It is working fine now. HOWEVER, the bilge pump would not work. I found the breaker was out so I reset it and the pump turned on, would run for about 15 seconds the pop the breaker and stop. it did this every time and seemed to suck water up but would not pump it out. I used a hose the clear the line of any possible blockage and the line was clear. I dont for the life of me know what is going on. This problem is minor compaired to the next one that poped up. I started the motor since it had not run in several months. it started like a dream first try. HOWEVER, I saw water coming out of the cowling and when I opend it I found water leaking from behind a plastic cover that had markings on it for the main motor fuses and other electrical connections. I took this cover off and found a gray metal box looking thing that had a water line going in the bottom of it. it was behind several electrical conntections . It appeared to be a small water pump or something. it had a crack in it about an inch long and was squirting water out toward the electrics( not good in my book) at least this was fresh water. I guess I need to find a Yamaha motor dealer that has a big heart to do an emergency repair on that or I towed 1200 miles for practice. As for the bilge, anyone got any Idea what is going on. I would like tofix it as apposed to buy another pump this yr.

Hello Dick, Sorry to hear of your misfortune, Your bilge pump will need to be replaced because of it not being disconnected from the power source before a freeze,It still turned on while the impeller was stuck in the frozen water, probably fried the armature,But they are very very inexpensive and easy to install, Get a repalcement on ebay for 20 bucks or so, It has happened to me before when We lived in Old Jersey, I didn't disconnect my batteries and store them for the winter,My bilge pump got a dead short from not spinning and killed what was left of the batteries too. As far as that little box by the fuses goes, It's obvious there was water in the block also and froze and split the box too, Let's all pray that little box is the extent of water freezing in a motor, If you would like, tell me the engine, model, year and horsepower. I'll look it up and find the part for you and a brief explanation on replacing, for the most part, less internal problems, most things are DIY with simple hand tools, Sounds like a lack of winterizing ,IMHO.........Dan

Dick,
How long are you in Florida? Heartland is open Tuesday (got to drag mine over also) and let John and the boys look her over for you Just go the web page and in the "contact us" tab the bottom link is a "get directions to our store" and just punch the the two addresses and have a map and ETA created for planning purposes.

I still think you should consider just leaving the boat here for the winter and pick it back up in the spring just in time for the Spring King Mackerel run Maybe John also has a location where he can store it for you?

Dave

Update on K9 Reno a.k.a. Dick.

My family had the pleasure of sharing a fast meal with Dick tonight. His motor is back working as of this afternoon and he has replaced his bilge pump. We told him if he moved south he wouldn't have these ice related problem's.

It was an honor to have Dick stop and see our 210. He was very interested in how we had changed our electrical system. It sounded like this might be a project for him down the road.

He left our home and headed for his family in Naples with hopes of getting some fishing in this week. We wish Dick and his family the best and hope to meet his wife in the future.

Everytime I read an article like this one, it makes me realize that truly great people own Triumph boats and belong to this forum. k9reno, I'm sorry about your ice problems, but what a great group of owners we have from coast to coast.

Talking

I must say right off that it was a real pleasure meeting Vic and his family. A nicer group would be hard to find. He has an awsomely outfitted 210, and I really do like the way he has his wiring set up. I have a number of Up grades and alterations I want to do to my 210. However as with everything else money is a major consideration. I really appreciate the assistance I got from Central Florida Yamaha. On less then 24 hrs. notice they were able to overnight the parts and get me in to service. Now I boat works again. I got a lot of cant get the parts for 3-4 days or not untill Jan because Yamaha is closed. I replaced the bilge pump again (2nd time) in less then 12 months. I am getting good at it. Well I should be able to get a fishing trip in hopefully tomorrow if the water cooperates, if not friday for sure.

Yep,
I can usually cook up a few hair brained ideas (both Engineering and Non Engineering types) in short order! Ha-Ha... So I came up with another one for this frozen block from left over flushing water issue

Just take one of those "Salt Away" type mixer units http://www.saltawayproducts.com/MixerPage.htm and after using the "Salt Away" product (if you run in salt water) for the final flush for the season, just fill the container back up with some Coolant (Anti Freeze) and run the engine on that mix for about 10 min or so... The ratio of coolant to water "should" be enough (pending on model) to prevent any freeze up of any internal engine parts from standing water.

Dick just needs to do the same for his bilge pump, by shooting some of that mix into the pump area bilge high enough to turn the pump on also... I would just make sure you are using the type of Coolant that is "Pet Safe" unless of course you are looking to terminate a few stray cats in the "Hood" at the same time
