Cool Keel Guard

I have been talking with some friends of mine who have "glass" boats and the subject of Keel Guards came up. I know Triumph hulls have great impact resistance but the thought of a guard to protect when beaching, trailering, etc appeals to me. My next thought was remembering reading here about the trials of applying stickers etc to the surface of a Triumph.

Has anyone installed a guard on their boat? Did you have any problems getting it to stick? If you have installed one, and it worked!!, could you give me some tips on the installation.

Thanks

Dave

Cincinnati,
I thought that might be the case, still maybe we will have someone who has tried to apply one in the last year give us an update. Thanks for the reply.

I agree and would also like to hear from those who have actually tried it. Seems like in the previous post that the conclusion was to not try the product due to the concern over long-term adhesion. Personally, I've not had any significant scuffing or otherwise wear of my keel. Seems like a better product for fiberglass boats.

It's been almost a year since I started that post on keel gaurds, I will say since then, I have beached or ran my boat into all kinds of nastys, rocks, sand, concrete, wood, you name it. All I have suffered is some scratches on the keel which can be repaired with a propane torch. I haven't even got around to doctoring it up yet, because its that minor.

I had a day last summer when we was docking, and a friend of mine accidentally hit the throttle and ran it up on some rocks/boulders. Now its not as dramatic as it sounds although we did hit the rocks with some degree of impact. My jaw hit the ground, and when we finally got the the boat out of water and I was able to inspect the damages. I was amazed that there was nothing more than some scratches and just a small dent in the keel. The boat was fine, I was really impressed and relieved (to say the least) If this was fiberglass, I could only imagine, It would of been real ugly and real exspensive.
