Exclamation Four people in a 170-CC

capsized today in the rough northern california surf, preliminary reports indicate that they were crabbing and got in too close to the surf line and got flipped.

Two were rescued and two died, the Coast Guard chopper that was attempting rescue also crashed into the surf with the crew reciving minor injuries.

A real bad day here today.

Wow. Sorry to hear about that. No matter what boat you're in or how much experience you have, you have to respect the power of natural forces. Those folks will certainly be in our prayers. Any chance they could have been members of our online community? Please keep us posted.

Reminds me too much of the old Coast Guard Motto "They say we have to go, but nobody says we have to come back" still holds true... The boat should have never gone out (bad choice) the Coastie's though don't have the luxury of a choice... Glad to see the Chopper Crew is OK and they got very lucky.

A few weeks back, I took my wife and Daughter to the local CG station to say hi and take a tour since my wife never saw me when I was on duty many years ago... It was like a time warp for many things were the same yet many had changed (technological advancements) like the new 47 footers (nice ride) and I hear that my old 41 and 44 footers are pretty much all gone. That is when you know it has been a while, when they retire your old rides! Ha-Ha...

So if you ever get a chance, call your local CG station (if you have one) and see if you can get a tour and shake the hands (when they are dry) of the guys who just may have to use that same hand to pull you out of the water one day... They are also (I know we were) big fans of Chocolate Chip Cookies And keep them "all" (not just the Coastie's) in your prayers...

They showed a picture of the boat upside down on the sand, it looks like it came through pretty well, here's the news story ...

Two die, helicopter goes down in boat rescue

The Times-Standard
MANILA A mother and son from Eureka died Saturday afternoon when their boat capsized in waves and the Coast Guard helicopter attempting to rescue them crashed into the water.

Vesta Lorraine Baker, 82, died at the scene and her son, Charles Wayne Baker, 59, was pronounced dead at the hospital. The Humboldt County Coroner s Office said the official cause of death was salt water drowning.

Two others who were on the boat were taken to the hospital. None of the four-member helicopter crew was hurt.

It's a shame these things happen, this was for sure not the fault of the boat, the seas were fairly calm here today, with swells from 6' to 10'
winds to 15, so to me it looks like operator error.

I'll keep an eye out for the CG investigation report.

I zoomed way in (they got fuzzy fast) on the pictures and that sure looks like a Triumph 190 Bay on her side there on the beach... What a shame, and from looking at the surf in the pictures, that is no place for a 190 to stay in for long before it would get all sick and sideways just like that one did.

Jan, did you know these people by chance?

No, I don't know these folks, I sure feel sorry for them though as it's a rough way to go.

Funny thing is 4 days ago I ordered one of these...

Stearns "Versatile type 3 vest as I fish a lot by myself and have worried about going over the side while fishing alone.

Wearing the vest sounds better and better all the time, I'll also be packing an Icom submersable VHF hand held in the vest.

I guess this story would have ended differently if they would have used thier PFD's.

The pics I saw on TV seemed to me to be of a 170-CC with the console knocked flat.

Before I went on my trip to the FL Keys last November, I had ordered a vest like yours but a Mustang brand with all of the pockets. I've put several survivial items in the pockets including a VHF radio.

This news item hit the early news here in Atlanta, GA this morning. My guess is, after they dropped a rescue swimmer in the water, that they may have caught a rotor tip in the surf which brought down the copter. Other than loosing power, that would be my guess.

That photo does look like a Triumph 190 CC.

I went to the Stearns website for a look see of their products. What a waste of time. Can't seem to find any products to look at or I can't find the right item to click on to reveal them.

Here is a link

Try here, I had a heck of a time with thier site too.

http://www.stearnsinc.com/Industrial...3&selection2=9

I'd searched all over the web thinking I'd get a better deal on the vest I'd chosen on line and the best price I was able to locate was with an outfit in Alaska, the vest listed for $63-$68 and with shipping it was going to be $78.00.

I decided to go to our local Marine dealer (Englund Marine) to see what they had as far as PFD's went and naturaly they didn't have the type I wanted.
But! The guy that ran the place said "We carry the full line and I can have that vest here to you in ten days for $54.00" BAM! Done deal.
