I personally bought the one that can fit into the rod holder, it is 31 inches long, and can tilt in any direction. fish2xs they made a custom one, you should be able to see in his gallery.

From Boaters World, we purchased the Magma Small Bait Board with holder 20 inch - Stock Number 479740094. So far, we have not needed anything larger, it works for us.

I have the small one from West Marine also, it’s all I need to cut bait. My fillet board however needs to be MUCH bigger ha ha ha! The bait board fits in the rear fish hold folded and upside down witch turns out to be pretty handy. And I don’t fillet until I get home due to the DFG restrictions in Ca.

I use a fairly cheapo one I got from Bass Proshops. It fits on top of a 5 gal bucket and leaves a small open area in front of the board. It is just molded plastic but has held up pretty well.

most reg rules say to leave 1 inch of skin on the filet, there are a few that say leave all the skin, such as a halibut. I allways leave the skin on for freezing purpose, and it is easier to cook on the barbi

Rockfish are now entire skin, the fillet length doesn’t leave room for error and the whole Halibut thing with leaving sides intact is a pain plus I like to cooperate with the DFG girls at the dock for counts and measurements (it’s the only time a female under 45 ever initiates a conversation with me! and yes the DFG knows how to work us stinky old fishermen) so I just opt for filleting at home.

Okay on the red filets, i guess i must of miss read, perhaps certain speacies have different rules. Now I ask you this, can I filet once i get to the dock?? reason I ask, I hate to have the remains hangin in the good ol garbage can waiting for it to be picked up. Gets kind of stinky.

My understanding is the regs refer to in possession which includes everything until you consume or give away your fish. I think freezer stocking can get you in trouble if the DFG wants to get nasty! And the difference between the way you have to handle different species is one reason I wait, I just wait I don’t want to spend that much time memorizing regs. since I don’t freeze it’s fillet board to frying pan (occasionally a short stop in the fridge I guess I’m just a dare devil at heart) I think you’re ok cutting as long a fillet as possible and leaving it as intact as possible and continue to check back with the DFG website for mid season reg changes! http://www.dfg.ca.gov/mrd/mapregs5.html
Good Luck
Victor
