Witnessed part of HydroLogics 16 hr battle with shark.
Fishing South of Port Saint Joe , Fl. weekend before last I run into a 210 in the middle of the ocean. Low and behold it was D. Brackett (HydroLogic). It was a few minutes later they hooked up with a big fish and started the fight. We figured it must be something good since HydroLogic did not have on a wire leader. After about 4.5 hours of checking on them we decided to run to some live bottom. Later I recieved this email.
We fought that rascle from 10:55 am to 3:45 am (~16 hours). It was pulling the boat backward at up to 1 kt for about 5 hours. Figured we couldn't lift it so we let out a lot of line to get a good angle and drug it (as it would let us) to the bar off of Indian Point. Think it was a lemon shark; probably 8-10 feet long. Decided it might not be safe to just gaff it and we didn't have a gun to subdue it so we just cut it off after we got a look at it. Interesting dodging shrimp trawlers at night at idle with a fish on. Attached is the best picture we got from the long fight. It was 3:45 am and only had a Q-Beam. Proves it's not a fish story, however. Good meeting you after all this time. Hope we meet again. We will probably be back down there in February.
