Northern Areas

Hi Guys,

I am in Mi. and fish the Great Lakes for walleye and steelhead. I have been a member for over a year. I am worried I do not see many if any triumph boats this far north. I was told somewhere along the line they can get water in the hull and freeze. We do not even have a dealer in the state. Really like what I see and read but what are your thoughts on this subject?

Rick

Rick, welcome to this web site.

I moved from the Flint area to Florida in 1973. Sorry, I do not miss the snow, the cold, sliding on the roads, and up at all hours shoveling my driveway clear.

Water freezing in Michigan? That will happen. Do a search for posts by K9Reno. He is not quite as far north as you, but close. He has had a few problems with freezing, but none that would be any different with a glass boat with gelcoat. Well that may not be a true statement in that I seem to remember him saying something about using a baseball bat on ice that was on his boat in the spring. For sure that would not happen with a glass boat.

For everyone that can not store their boat inside with some form of heat to prevent freezing, getting all the water out of the boat has got to be an issue. When I was in Michigan, my glass boat stayed in an unheated garage, and we did all that we could to remove every bit of water before freezing weather set in. I would be following the same procedure with my plastic boat.

Good luck with your search for information. Please do a lot of reading of the “Forums” and the “Articles” on this web site. The members that came before you have posted a wealth of information. If you are looking for something very specific, try the “Search” feature, that really helps you find things.

Water in hull and freezing temps. I can talk on that subject. I am in Ft Wayne In. Last yr I had some drains put thru my floor boxes that contributed to water getting into my hull which I had not had before. The winter last yr had a couple weeks of single digit nad sub zero temps in dec. my boat froze so hard that the electrical rectifier cooling cover in the motor split. I have found no problem in my boat due to that freezing. I have since addressed the water in the hull issue and it is no longer a problem. I also had a drain put in the transome to make sure there si no water in the foam when I put it up for the winter. As for Osprey's comment, it was a hammer I used to break the ice off my boat not a bat.
rjmorley. I take it you fish the west basin also.. I fish out of a marina east of toledo

K9RENO, sorry for my misquote, but did remember you attacked the ice with something that would do damage to a glass boat. A hammer sounds even harsher than a nice round bat.

Rick,
I own a 2000 Logic 17DC. I bought this new in 1999 here in Charlevoix Michigan.
The dealer no longer carries this line (never switched to Triumph).
I have had no problems with cold freezing weather.
I have stored my boat in an unheated barn for many years, no problems.
I do take time to ensure the boat is winterized properly.
With proper care, you should have no problems either.
I have hauled this boat to Nakina Canada and fished Walleye in late September, the air temperature most days was 32 to 38 degrees. Boat was taken out of the water each night and I had no freeze problems.
Find a boat and buy one, these are special!!

Triumph boats are in Alaska, Buffalo, Sodus Point on Lake Ontario, Syracuse
the Thousand Islands and Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin, all really cold places.
I know they are actively pursuing dealers in your area and also have a dealer in northern Ohio, Beaver Park which is in Lorain. Arney's in Sodus Point uses his Triumphs to push ice away from the docs when it starts to breakup in the spring. Triumph has a rep for your area and have really just started to concentrate on it. Hope this helps!

Triumph has boats in all extremes from Arizona to Alaska and recently added four dealers in Australia.

Thanks for the info. I have been down to Beaver Park but it is a haul from my house and was worried if I needed warranty work etc. If the Rep. gets something going local maybe he could let me know. Will they have any boats in the Detroit show?

Thanks,
Rick

I created a forum for Triumph dealers to introduce themselves and their dealerships but we've had very little participation. I don't understand why. If I were a new dealer I'd be looking for every opportunity to let folks know about it and I can't imagine a better place to do it than here if you're a Triumph dealer. I'll forward this thread to Triumph and hopefully they'll send a note to all their reps encouraging dealers to post in the Dealer forum. )
