Dealer Talking bs
The other day I made a phone call or two to dealers around my quad-state area for boat pricing. I talk to a dealer in a Mid Atlantic State and told him I was interested in such in such a boat with an E-Tec engine. I understood from the begining that this dealership did not sell e-tec but I could order the boat from Triumph with whatever engine I wanted to. This guy must have spent a good part of 15 minutes trying to sell me either a Honda or Yamaha. I have owned Yamaha is the past and love the 4 strokes, however I was very interested in e-tec. He then procedded to bash the e-tecs, their gonna blow up, they smoke a lot, he went on and on. I wound up the conversation by asking if they are such bad engines why does Triumph hang them on their boats and why is Triumph one of the named boat dealers in the Evinrude brochure? He did not have a response and I hung up. I just don't get this kind of BS from a dealer. Is he ?? because I won't be back to him for engine service??? Can anyone post a name in either PA,NJ,DE or MD that does put E-Tec's on the Triumphs.

NC, I can guess why my dealer doesn't participate. His other line is Rinker. When he sells one it's a $300,000 sale or more. When he sells a fully outfitted Triumph the sale is $35,000. It's not hard to figure out where his focus is.

nothing wrong with Yamaha, I gotta say I agree with the dealer!
I read a post on another blog this summer from a respected guide who uses his engines constantly, had brand new e-tec and it had some major issues for him. He was down and out for several weeks during his prime season. Evinrude service was great but still downtime is downtime. I'm up over 400 hours now on my 200 HPDI and still no problems.............knock on wood. |

It happens a lot ... If a Dealer won't sell you what you want, go elsewhere.
The local Triumph dealer only sells Mercury, but he has agreed to have an Evinrude mechanic install an E-tec for me ... keeping the customer happy is good for business because now i'll need to order a sounder/gps and a storm cover and, and, and ![]() I have a 60hp E-tec with 140 hours on it and it is the best outboard I have ever owned. (after 2 Johnos, 2 Mercs, 1 Honda and a Suzuki) My next motor will be a 75 E-tec on a 170DC

#1 rated Customer Satisfaction by JD Powers is Honda and Suzuki in a tie.
That said, Suzuki usually is cheaper than Honda. E-Tec has a propriatory oil that is becoming more available and tend to be a tad bit lighter than 4 strokes. Newer Mercury Optimax Saltwater motors are also good and lighter than E-tec. Yamaha has alot of service centers and tons of owners. It is hard to go wronge these days with motors untill you have a problem with one....all motors will fail, they are mechanical. Go for long warranty and convinient dealer that you trust and buy a service manual and change your own oil/spark plugs/impellars etc. Good luck, Molar PS I have had a Suzuki 4 stroke for 6 years and have had ZERO problems. I think two years ago I had to turn the ignition key more than once (twice actually) for it to start because I had it setting up for 6 months in the driveway over winter. I don't have a dealer for 300 miles! |

Molarboater has a good point.
I know a few good folks with Suzukis and they swear by them also. If I get another boat it would be Yamaha or Suzuki. You can find deals on both if you look. they are all getting competitive. |
