planing

Does anyone know of a book, video, site or any other information source that would help me with an exact (or almost) reference about the proper motor angle when on plane. My understanding is that the engine should be trimmed out to be vertical and the propeller to be at right angles to the surface of the water for best performance. I'm thinking of installing a trim gauge onto my 190 Bay, which is equipped with a 115 hp Evinrude with hydrofoil attaached.

Without some frame of reference I keep fiddling with the trim switch searching for I know not what. I normally cruise at around 3500 rpm and the boat goes 22-25 mph.

I've gotten all kinds of advice including don't trim the engine out at all to trim it back until the boat "popoises" and then adjust.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

MM

It's not really rock science, more like acquired feel... Adjust your trim for the max speed (lowest fuel burn) for those running condations and that RPM "after" the boat is on a plane. If the seas states are rough, then lower the bow to smooth out the ride (if needed) usually little touchs on the buttons is all that is needed, make a little change and watch the gauges to get her dialed in. I have a trim guage on my 190 Bay along with the full Honda digtal engine mangement gauges (nice toys) and the guages make it nice to take a quick glance or to use as a reference point for future runs. The more time you spend with your rig, the better you will get a feel for how it best performs under all types of running condations...

Enjoy!

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your quick reply. The problem is that I would be better off if it was "rocket science". All my life, gut feelings have been a precursor to diarrhea. I think I'll have a trim gauge installed and once I find a setting that works I'll be able to return to it.

At the very least it will be something else to glance at while boating.

Thanks again

MM

PS: My wife's opinion is that if I kep adding things onto this boat it will eventually sink.
