"Togglers" and foam in Transom

Has anyone used "Togglers" or anything like them to install something on the transom (e.g swim ladder) and if so were they able to expand into the foam. I have to mount something heavy, 35 lbs., on the transom and the marina says that the foam prevents them from using anything like a toggle.

Also: If they have to dig out the foam in order to install is there any way to refoam?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Happy New Year to all

Hi I installed a swim platform on the port side rear. I through bolted it using ss all thread rod and 3" aluminum backer plates. I works just fine. D Brown

Hi DBrown,

First, thanks for your quick reply. I assume that you went through both the outer and inner hulls with the ss rod and ended up inside the port side rear compartment with the backing plate . How long was the rod?

My problem is that I'm not doing this myself (maybe I should) and am at the mercy of the marina. They say that they can 't go through both hulls, and in fact laughed at me when I suggested it.

Any more info would be greatly appreciated.

Best wishes for a Happy New Year to all

I used four Togglers to mount a swim platform and it can easily handle 200+lbs. Just drill the appropriate size hole to insert the Toggler and using a flat head screw driver or knife, pick out just enough foam to insert. Once you have finished, fill the hole with Rule Elastomeric and seat the bolt with the same. It is an easy install.

Try using the "Search" mode for Togglers or swim platform or trolling motor etc.

Thank you MolarBoater,

This same marina rejected "Togglers" out of hand when I first suggested using them. They claimed that they wouldn't "open". That's when I suggested using the stainless steel rod that DBrown used. Between the two of you I am now armed with sufficient information to bring a $3,500 nightmare to an end. If all else fails I now have the confidence to reinstall my device myself, using Togglers.

Thanks, guys!

msmandel,

Be sure to use stainless steel togglers, not the cheap nickel plated fold up type for wall/ceiling installs through sheetrock. You can buy them at places like Boaters World.

I installed a kicker motor mount on my 210CC using SS togglers. I did just like Molarboater said and it worked great. You can also refill the lost foam with the spray can type foam, let it expand and dry and them trim the excess. You are not removing enough to make any difference in the boats flotation. I just wanted to eliminate the air space so moisture could not accumulate in the area around the metal parts.

Use the search function and you will see several uses of the togglers.

I also used SS all thread to do part of my install completely through the inner and outer walls of the transom. I did this above the water line though and I added a spacer between the two walls so the transom was not squeezed together when I tightened the nuts. This was a design the factory gave to me. The motor mount is probably stronger than the boat itself.

Good luck, Codfish

Once you drill the hole, you can put a small allen wrench on the end of a drill. (shaped like an L) It will "clear out" a small area in the foam for the toggler to flip over.
