mvbluefish,
sounds good, you should try to spend Sat night over there with us in Falmouth, partake in the evening festivities and share your secrets. At the very least dock up for cocktail hour at the resort.
As for fishing, who knows we could even end up over by the Vineyard. There are many options in early June................

Go with the flow

I will definately try and get as much time off as I can from work but thats easier said than done with our short tourist season here on M.V. It's definately a good thing its not on the previous weekend because I know now that Memorial Day weekend is a must work situation and I'd be hearing about the results on the board, not participating. I'm sure I'll find enough time to get over there on the weekend of 6/4 the question will be how much. Lord knows I'll try my best to work it out in my favor. Its a ways off yet but it will be in my mind to keep that weekend clear.
As far as fishing secrets go, to be honest I do most of my late spring/early summer fishing from shore. My boat doesn't usually go in the water til june anyways. I'm more keyed into the little tunas that haunt us from late July to October. Springtime Striper and Bluefish fishing is sort of tune up time for the hardcore fishing I do later. Don't get me wrong I love playing tug of war with cow stripers and big nasty blues but I'm not too sure I know much more than you do technique wise.
I can tell you some of my favorite spots that might help. Although since I'm fishing out of the Logic 17, some of the spots that are best aren't so safe for a smaller boat like mine. Spots like Wasque shoals off the S.E. corner of the island hold monsters, but that rip out there can be treacherous on the wrong day. Same can hold true for Hedge fence (just off Falmouth) It can be tricky with a small boat dealing with a heavy rip. My 17 feels more at home at middle ground a gentler rip off west chop that continues between the islands north shore and the Elizabeth Islands. Iv'e had some fish there before in springtime and they're constantly cruising that whole rip foraging for squid or herring. Those of you with the 21 won't have issues like the 17's do with fishing churning waters and places like Wasque shoals, Nomans Island, and Gay Head (tops on the list to find the Bigguns'). The smaller boats may feel more comfortable fishing inshore off South Cape beach, Middle ground, and Wood's Hole. Theres plenty of fat finny critters lurking in these neighborhoods.
Either way the old adage match the hatch holds true for just about every fishing hole. Those Storm Wild eye shad soft plastics have been the rage from shore the last couple years here although I haven't used them in the boat at all. You also can't go wrong with the surface poppers they have been producing year after year, no doubt. The truth is though nothing beats bait. Live herring is the closest thing to a guarantee as you can get. Live eels are what the commercial guys use but at night mostly. Dead herring is also a big producer, the shore guys clean up with em'. Plenty of guys do the wire line, trolling, etc. but this is not my area of expertise.
Anyway you do it, everyone should have a shot at some linesiders and choppers as this is peak run time in the spring here. When all else fails I just keep scouting around til I see birds, fish are always somewhere it just takes time to find them!
Anyways It sounds like it's going to be a blast even if we catch sea robbins and sunshine. A day in the boat is like a glimpse of heaven. Catching fish is just a bonus, either way I'm looking forward to it. Hope to see you all there - Tight Lines,
MVBLUEFISH

Great report MVB - does anyone have a chart or a link to a chart for the Cape that would list all these spots? How far of a ride are some of these holes?

With the 190, I'm likely not to get too brave entering the bigger rips. Although the 210 is only 2' longer, the freeboard on the 190 isn't that much more than the 170. Plus, it seems that there are enough 190's and 170's on this trip to warrant staking out these inshore spots as a group.

Hey, it's going to be in the upper 40's this weekend - heat wave!

MVBluefish,
thanks. what do you do for work on the Vineyard? I'm going to be there for our 2nd annual family vacation the 3rd week of June. Maybe I'll give you a call. keep the 210 cc moored in Edgartown harbor, so we usually hit Wasque Pt, last year was great! Lots of stripers and blues.

Cincinnati - it all depends on the weather conditions, if it is a calm day you could fish some of those rips, middle ground is real close to us and somewhat protected(at times). As Mvbluefish said, there are also many spots close by to sniff out.

a nice little book I found is called "Fishing New England - A boaters guide to the Cape and Islands", it is available from "OntheWater.com" , just click on the OTW Bookstore icon. It is also a sweet little website and monthly magazine. They have good fishing reports once the season gets going. The book covers mostly the basic spots, which MVBluefish covered , but also goes into techniques etc..

take care,

fishahn

Fishahn,
I drive taxi year round. I run 3 vans on season mostly out of the airport. We deliver lost luggage for airlines, do tours, and traditional taxi/ shuttle stuff. The company name is appropriately called Bluefish Taxi.
Definately give me a buzz when you are on island If I have any time off I would love to join you on a trip to Wasque. I usually try and get my time off when the M.V. Derby starts in Sep. then I go full bore on the fish or as much as I can anyway.
Springtime I'm so busy getting cars ready employees trained etc. etc. that I'm lucky to get any fishing time at all. I definately would love to fish Wasque though, I've fished it a thousand times from shore but I can count on one hand how many times I've been out there in my 17. It has to be a real gem of a day to even consider navigating that water. I've seen more than one 50 pounder beached at the point. I'm sure the boat guys aren't having any problem hooking up. I can't tell you how crazy it can get with bluefish blitzes there. I've pulled in 10-15 choppers til my arm was junk on many occasions.
Its definately a long haul from Falmouth though, not too bad with a 21 but I'm sure it would take me about 45 minutes in my boat. I live and launch in Edgartown. The town launch in Katama is just down the st. from my house, so unless fish are rumored to be somewhere else I'll launch in Katama and come out of Edgartown Harbor.

spoke with Shawn at Green Harbor Inn couple days ago. They still have some space left for our weekend, however they are getting a bit tight. So if any of you are still thinking of joining us, you should book your space soon! Information, phone numbers etc, are all in previous posts.

tight lines to all...........

outta here,
not exactly sure how many, can only tell by looking at posts on this site. When I spoke with the guy at the lodge he didn't have his book in front of him. I think there are 4 of us booked so far at the property, with several others still hoping to join us. I'm sure we will have a good time no matter how many are there, hopefully this will become an annual event and grow each year!
