does anyone know the average hrs boaters put on theirs boats a year. i was thinking about 100hrs. and is it true that you can get more hrs out of a 4 stroke than a 2 stroke...

Smile Mmmm

Let's see. I purchased mine in February and it's now the last day of June. I've got 50.4 hours (just completed the 50 hour service) on my 2 stroke Yamaha 70. So, depending on weather the rest of the year, I would guess 150 hours is about right for boating once a week.

Engine overhaul times depend on the wear of the motor. One way to check is doing a compressiion check on a new motor (compression a bit low until breakin), one that has 50 hours (should be broken in now and at max compression) and continue every 50 hours. When compression begins to drop or one cylinder is way different than the others, time for an overhaul.

This is why it's a good idea to purchase the service manual for your motor. The book gives lots of information and is great bathroom reading material.

Follow up on previous post - (fat fingers cut it off before finishing):

Some facts to put this into context:

I live in Colorado, about 2 hrs from nearsest "Boatable" water.

My wife and I are retired, so we tend to travel a lot, with either our 5th wheel and boat, or pop-up camper and boat, depending on duration of trip.

When at a place where we can use the boat, we average 4-6 hrs a day.

Since our 170 DC with 75 HO Yamaha is our first (and hopefully, our last) boat, I can't provide any info on 2 Stroke vs 4 Stroke.

Ron

Hrs on boat

I've had my 170 since late January and have a little over 30 hrs on it. It will be going up dramatically soon as we have a week long fishing trip coming in July. I really like my quiet 75 hp 4 stroke.

If I am right, when I turn the key in my ignition w/o cranking, the tach points to the number of hours? If so I have 350 and still running great. Not bad for 6 years!
Alot of those hours (at least half) have been at 4knts trolling the Gulf!

Just keep changing the oil/filter and foot oil, keep the zerks greased and don't run WOT.
