How to name a boat....

Hi all. I'd like to put the name of my new boat on the hull. Does anyone have any recommendations on doing this? Stickers...who makes them, where? Custom paint? I know I'll need to treat the surface first for it to stick but I'm really looking for direction on options for having the lettering created. Thanks for any input.

This is what OspreyVic said:

We went to a local sign shop. The vinyl letters were on clear vinyl, spaced properly, etc. The curve of the boat makes putting them on a challenge, so if we ever have to do it again, I will pay the sign shop to do the install (I would be with them to put the primer on). As careful as my son and I were, we still ended up with wrinkled letters. Using the 3M 94 primer is the key to making the letters stick. I think getting paint to stick would be a challenge.

The sign companies I talked to charge by the size of the letters, how many etc. My wife and I found the font so we were able to give them a sample of how we wanted it to look.

We picked one of the sign company's standard solid colors, but they could do the letters with shading, borders, etc. It is just a matter of money.

Hope this helps.

We probably will name our boat in a week or two, so I will let you know.

my dealer has a company he uses to do custom lettering for registration numbers. I had them do the name for the Work-N-Dog . The words came in the same script as the numbers and all together on a strip. All I had to do was prep the surface and peal the backing off place the words how I wanted them and peal off the covering. Worked great real easy. cost about $40

Randy, I would strongly recommend that you find a local sign shop. Every place I looked at did vinyl letters, so it is very common.

It is very hard to tell colors and letter sizes over the internet. I would also pay them to install, that way they can make a new letter if they mess it up. Your job should be to choose the size of letters, how tall, how wide, the font, and where they are to be applied (so measure the location carefully). When the letters are ready, I would recommend that you take your boat to the sign maker, apply the primer, and have them do the install.

The only time I would suggest applying the letters yourself, is if they are only a few letters OR the letters are only being applied to a flat surface. We applied ours where the boat curves and that caused the problems.

The smaller size that we applied to the transom was no problem.

Believe it or not KINKO's office supplies, does Vinyl lettering. Of all types , colors, and sizes. All arranged level or to what ever you desire. Fair prices. I have our company logo done up for our trucks, and other prodjects. It is also very easy to apply, but remember to prep your hull first.

hey NCAngler a guy posted this thread on NC Waterman (http://www.ncwaterman.com/forum/foru...=10459&KW=name) and recommended 'GrafiXhouse' out of Raleigh. looks like they did a great job to me!!

edit to ad: you have to register to view it. if you guys aren't registered at NCW you should be. It's free and, along with NCangler's site, is one of the best fishing message boards around.
