Can the rod holder in the gunnel be removed?

While fishing with a pole in the rod holder, one of the rod holder caps broke off. I was able to get a replacement from my dealer. I removed the three screws in the holder but I can't remove the rod holder. I tried using a screwdriver and all I did was dent the boat. Next, I put a flat piece of steel on the gunnel and again used a flat blade screwdriver to pry the rod holder up. Still can't get if off. Has anyone ever removed a rod holder before? If so, what was the Magic trick?

I looked at my holder and my theory and it is just a theory is this.... During manufacturing the holder was installed and then they filled the gunnel areas with floatation foam. The foam might have sealed around the holders and basicly glued them in place. Now I am probably wrong but that is my guess.

thfireman you are absolutely correct. the foam is whats holding in the rodholder after you remove the screws, unless there is also rule around or under the holder mount. take a strong screwdriver and try to pry out the rodholder carefully so you dont scratch up your gunnel too much, it will pop out, I did it to mine. just need to break the foam away, try working around the rod holder.

Smile If it Aint Broke, Don't Fix It

Hi Guys,

I decided to leave the rod holder alone. I used some SS fishing leader, wrapped one end around a rod holder screw, put some more Rule in and tightened down. I rivited the other end of the leader to the rod cap.

I figured that the foam held the rod holder in so well, if I messed with it, and removed it, when it went back in, it might move around.

Thanks for the help.

Barry, I considered this too, but have not had any problems with the rod holder moving or pulling out, when a fish hits, it does not put that kind of pressure on the holder, rather a pulling back not up pressure, and I've had large tuna hammer some of the rods in those holders.
but if your fix worked, then by all means leave it alone! I need to get two new caps for mine also, what is the brand of those holders again, I forgot?

Smile Rod Holder Caps

Hi Fish,

The replacement cap came from my dealer. He got it from Triumph. It has their logo on the cap and I wanted to keep it the same as the other side.
