Looking at a new 21CC Triumph

Hello everyone. I am looking at purchasing a new triumph 21CC and have several questions. First does anyone know the difference between a Honda 150 4 stroke and a Yamaha 150 4 stroke which is better and which is faster at WOT.

I have done a lot of research on these boats. One concern I have is there a lot of water the develops in the bilge when fishing? My neighbor has a 21CC 2001 and when we went fishing there was always 2 inches of standing water in the back of the boat. I asked him if this was normal and he said yes. Does this sound correct?

Last question I have is I currently live in Maryland very close to the Chesapeake Bay and I currently own a 24' Offshore Grady White. Everytime my son and I go fishing it always ends up being a 12 hour day on the water. We mostly go out in any condition except extreme weather. I have often read on this web site how smooth the ride is on the triumph boats. When you get into 3 to 4 foot with 3 to 5 secound intervals waves how does this boat handle in these conditions. Any reply would be great. Thanks

Hi dalah. I might be of some help. We have a 2005 CC with a Yamaha 4 stroke. The last test we did with 20 year old son and I was 42 MPH at 5900 RPM, and might have gotten a little better with more effort. That was fast enough for me.

As to water problem's, we solved that issue. Water comes in over the transom very easily because it is so low. We used plugs to seal up all four holes. This leaves water in the splashwell area, but no water ever made it to the deck which means our feet stay dry.

We do not have the waves you mention in the Gulf, but can say that everyone has commented on how the boat rides. One guide even said that his back and knees would be killing him after a day on his boat but he felt fine after a day on our Triumph. The flexing really does help, but the boat needs to be supported correctly when out of the water.

Good luck on your search. It took us many years of digging to find Triumph and we have never looked back. No one has a chance of talking us into a glass boat that I would have to polish. Clean up is so much easier, the ride is so much better, and if we hit something a little hard there is no gelcoat to crack. The only thing I am missing is a shinny finish. Hummm. No problem missing that.

The 01 210cc Has A Large 85 Gallon Fuel Tank And If The Boat Is Equipped With A Large Hp Four Stroke ,it Would Allow Water To Backflow Onto The Deck If The Scuppers Fail To Check The The Water At The Transom. The Factory Started Using Ball Checks And Put 70 Gal. Fuel Tanks To Help Reduce The Total Weight At The Transom. I Do Not Think It Is As Serious With Smaller Hp 2 Strokes . I Have Had Mine Fill Both Rear Fish Boxes And There By Flood The Deck And If The Bilge Pump Were To Fail ,i Would Have Been In Trouble...i Have Since Put Rabud Brand Ball Checks On The Transom And I Keep A Spare Bilge Pump With Alligator Clips That I Can Pump Water If The Need Should Ever Arise Again. This Is One Of The Reasons We Have A Section Devoted To The Earlier Models To Help Those Issues Be Made Aware Of And Solutions To Resolve Them.
Once Again ,this Is An Early Model Issue And I Would Think The Factory Has Had Time To Correct This In The Current Models

It is still a problem. Two inches is not normal but if the scuppers are not sealing when you go out I can guarantee you that your bilge pump will run off and on all day until it burns out if you are doing a slow troll or jigging. Ours is a 2007 with a 175 with two adults a full 70 gal tank and fishing gear with leaky scuppers it wore out a pump in two weeks of fishing. It will only self bail at 15mph or better or when it is on the trailer. It is not a self bailing deck. All rainwater and washdown water run through the fish holds and out the bilge pump. Also Keep in mind anything you wash down your deck will try to come out your pump.

Other than that this boat is the best riding boat in rough water on the market.

Before you buy one I would suggest taking one out with your estimated weight for a normal day. The problem is not fixed on the new boats. Our is a 2007 with a 175. in a slow troll or when jigging. is the scuppers are leaking you will burn out your bilge pump. Ours went out on one two week trip. This is not a self bailing deck, unless you are at 15mph or faster or it is on the trailer. Any water that hits the deck will exit through the pump unless you are on the step.

As far as handling rough water we can stay confortable and dry at 25-30mph and most other boate are back at 15-20. They handle very well in poor weather.

The problem must not be all 210 scuppers. Mine is a 2003 and I have not had any problem with water coming in through the scuppers onto the deck. I carry an inch or so in the splash wells but have never really had any on the deck, much less enough to wear out my bilge pump. I have frozen a couple to death.

I believe Triumph did have a batch of scuppers a couple years ago that were not sealing properly. If you are having a problem with scuppers try contacting your dealer for assistance. They are fairly simple to replace but be sure to use RULE for sealing around them. I replaced mine and was still getting some water thru the splash well flaps. I just replaced the flaps with some duckbill scuppers and I think these will do the trick, but I haven't been on the water with them yet.

I have an '04 model Honda 4 stroke and have had -0- trouble with it since day one. It's been very reliable and trouble-free. I don't run WOT too often, but top-end speed will depend on how loaded your boat is (assengers, gear, fuel,,,). I generally get 35-40mph when I need to move quick. I can recommend the Honda based on my experience with no qualms at all.

Edit 3/22/08:
Just today my wife and I went out of Cedar Key, FL fishing. After a rough, choppy morning, we decided to head in and load up. On the run in, I notice a boat crew waving lit emergency flares up ahead. We pull up and their boat was 1/3 submerged from the stern. We pulled up and got the two crew into our boat. They had anchored from the stern with rough chop conditions (WRONG!!). They had already reported the incident to Coast Guard, so we stayed until the CG showed up. About 10 minutes later, Sea Tow shows up (Honda 150 4-stroke on their boat). About 20 minutes later, CG shows up with, you guessed it, a Honda 4-stroke on their boat. Three rescue boats, three Honda motors...see a pattern? It was a wild day on the water. Oh well, like they say, no good deed goes unpunished...on the way home we had a flat tire on the boat trailer. Tight lines! <" ))) ><
