170 CC: Variations thru the years??

Greetings again;

In my continuing watch for a used 170 center console, I'm seeing a lot of different model years up for sale. I'm wondering about the differences between years--the 2000-2001 Logic models, and the later Triumph versions.

I've picked up a lot of info on this board.

Do any of the years have features that make them more desirable than other years? Or problem areas, that should be avoided?

Again, thanks in advance..as a visitor, I won't be able to respond to replies.

Like most of the Triumph models, the 170CC has evolved each year...getting better all the time. For instance, my 2003 model has rod holders in front of the center console and directly behind the baitwell. This is a bad place for rod holders... if you have someone sitting on the baitwell they cannot lean back without hitting any rods. Later versions placed them to the side of the console, a much better locaton. I don't think any of the 170 models have any "problem" areas, as such...but then that's just my opinion.

Good luck with your search.

I have an 03 170 and some things I've noticed looking at the 08's are the Stern light mount moved from the top gunwale to behind the rear seat. (I don't particularly like this for similar reasons as the rod holder mentioned above.) However, the newer models have a screw-down access plate that the splashwell deck plate is mounted to. It make pump replacement a lot easier. My arms don't fit through the deck plate and the gas tank, so I am having to add a hatch of some kind back there. The fit on the newer models seems to be na little better. There are rather large gaps where my splashwell meets my transom that have been closed up on newer boats. I like the older cooler seat versus the new leaning post. The new seat just doesn't seem to look right on the boat to me, however it does have notches to hold the backrest in different positions. The new models have rocker switches vs toggle switches, it gives a better look. The new models used different plastic for the helm, I like the older Graphite panels vs the newer metal ones. (both types are decorative plastic with a film adhered to the back for texture). Also, a boat there is hull warranty to consider. My boat was 3 months past the 5-year limit on transfer when I got it. Newer hulls may still be able to transfer the warranty. An old Logic probably will not have a hull warranty.It's all about what your want and are willing to trade off on. I like my 03 and will make the necessary modifications to make it suit my individual needs. And maybe one day I'll buy a new console so my rod holders are on the side.

Hi Steve,

The 170 is a great boat. The hull hasn't changed much over the years because it is doesn't need to. It rides so smooth. I have a 2006 and one thing I notice about that year is that Triumph started using more Stainless Steel hardware on that model. Simple things like Bilge output, transom drains, and baitwell output were changed to stainless hardware instead of plastic. This year also includes the high speed pickup for the baitwell. As others have noted Triumph added upgrades to the console switches and added white fogless Faria gauges which look real nice. My best advice to you would be to consider the overall condition of the boat and motor. If you can afford it get something with a quality motor that has been properly maintained. The boat itself is built to last.
